Wolverine did take time to become a superstar-- that's often overlooked by fans (especially more recent ones who think he was ALWAYS the "coolest" X-Man). He got there honestly, though; he was featured in some really terrific stories, ones that caught the imaginations of fans and professionals alike. He had enough "space" around him to fill in a busload of backstory and was dangerous enough to make him unpredictable (unlike a lot of heroes of the time, even Marvel's). I doubt he'd have made it absent JB's support and stellar work. "I helped make Wolverine a star" is far from the worst thing one can claim on his CV. :)

And yeah, Maddy did not look like Jean (except for being a redhead). All of that had to be inferred from Scott's reaction and who knows? Maybe the red visor's affected his vision...

I part of me wonders what would have happened if it had been Wolverine on Count Nefaria jet and died. Well, I'm sure he would have regenerated and returned at some future story, but could Thunderbird been a alternate reality "Wolverine"?

I remember very well that first introduction of Madelyne Pryor. I didn't recognize her as "Jean Grey" at all. In fact, Paul Smith (one of my MOST favorite artists) drew her so unlike the Jean Grey I "knew" that the ongoing mystery of her connection to Jean never took hold for me. I could never get into that sub-plot.

But that's how Paul Smith would have drawn Jean!
Really it's the kind of scene that would work better in a movie with the same actress playing both roles just with different hair styles. Not so much when you've got a new artist who's never drawn the previous character in the comic before, has a pronounced style of his own and isn't too concerned with drawing on-model.

Logan became interesting when Vindicator was introduced, then Alpha Flight, and then the Hellfire Club saga and soon after The Wendigo two-parter.
Don't see Thunderbird fitting into those storylines in quite the same way.

As for Paul Smith on X-Men; I really enjoyed his art and unique storytelling style... loved his Wolverine particularly. His style reminded me of Ditko and I was glad when he ended up doing a run on DR. STRANGE.

That Maddie introduction was the one scene where we needed Chris Claremont to add some words in. I remember thinking 'What's the deal here'? and by process of elimination over some minutes coming to the conclusion that she must look like Jean.
But then had to wait a month for that to be confirmed. I liked PMS, I thought his first few issues were well drawn. I didn't have a clue what went on in issue 168 - the art seemed all over the place but overall I liked the style. No one was on model and I learned to live with that and he only seemed to figure out how to draw Cyclops' visor during his last issue.
So it seems I liked his art despite finding so many things wrong with it as far as the X-Men were concerned. Weird

It's the hair that throws it more than anything.

PSmith is a bright spot on the book in hindsight of what we've seen. I love the way he drew Kitty's hair, and women in general. IMO that's why he got the job. JB draws such AMAZINGLY gorgeous women capable of tearing your throat out one panel, and breaking your heart the next, Cockrum never stood a chance. The ante had been upped.

I've said this before, but, I've had a lifetime of dream girls who still can't match the Byrne-girl in my head. Sad, but true!
