Wow, is that the origin of the now legendary Byrne corner-box heads? I wonder if anyone still has that piece?

The last sketch of Phoenix is interesting because the pose looks to my eyes to be in the style of a different artist, but I can't put my finger on it...

Weren't those heads done when, supposedly, JB had a limited repertoire of faces? Jeesh! Look at all those beautiful women-- no two alike! And you can tell it's a different man in the Giant Man mask than the Goliath mask.

Nowadays the variety is ridiculous, but it was already great back then!

Love those individual headshots.....each character IS recognizable.

I remember the first issue of X-men (#123 - Arcade) when John / Terry's heads first appeared!  Awesome.

That Batman cover....WOW!!!! The printed version does not do that page ANY justice whatsoever..hiding of the signature doesnt help either.

Also love that Danger Unlimited splash too....great detail

I had to look up AVENGERS #181 and 201 to see if Gyrich and Jarvis got the cover boxes! No. But I'm glad the heads were ready in case!

I would imagine those heads were done for the Marvel Handbook. A good percentage of them were never in the corner boxes.

They were all done for the corner symbols. They just didn't all get used, for various reasons. They were recycled in OHOTMU.

Those heads are another example of what I call "Corner of the Desk" job, where I walked into Mark Gruenwald's office and on the spot he asked me to do a bunch of them. At least the heads don't show that rightward skew that seemed to show up in so many figures I drew this way.

Never get tired of seeing JB's drawings of Iron Man in that armor.

And seeing the corner box/OHOTMU head shots takes me back to happy times of childhood, like seeing pictures of old friends.

I love that BATMAN 3-D with the Joker-in-a-box. Classic!
