JB, DC has just approved a redesign of Batgirl's costume. I think it looks ridiculous: shiny snaps, leather jacket, laced boots, pouches, zippers...it really has to be seen to be believed.
Putting that nonsense aside, what "best practices" do you follow when you design or redesign a costume? Is there a method that you regularly follow?

I've seen worse. At least that costume evokes the original.*When it comes to costume design I look to someone like Gil Kane. His designs invariably followed the contours of the human form. Rarely did Gil go for flaps and flanges and other superfluous items. It's also important, even in a fantasy environment, to keep the costumes easy to get into and out of. In other words, the more straps and buckles, the more laces and zippers, the less "practical" the costume is. ______________ * Or, for the sake of purists, the second!

OT, but does no one proofread or edit anymore? I
understand typos and spelling mistakes and the like from
Joe & Jane average on Facebook or web forums, but "put
through the 'ringer'" in professionally written article
from a major website (MTV)? Very irritating.

Trevor, it's probably because the people writing and editing the articles
have never seen a "wringer" and don't know where the term originated.

I was never really a fan of all this reinventing of the wheel, as I put it. That costume looks a little like a military uniform with those button things on her shoulders. I can't think of any way to get into and out of it very fast, between the buttons, zippers, pouch-laden belt and laced hi-tops. They must imagine that Babs is quite a quick dresser!
Actually, I'm not surprised by MTV, really. By all appearances, not having proper English writing skills is now hip. Who needs it? (For my part, the elementary and junior high school language lessons are still quite valid.)

The "vogue" has been for Batman, Robin, and now Batgirl to
have "workman" or "military-style" boots rather than the
classic sleek boots with a slight heel. Is it more
"realistic"? Perhaps (though it looks more difficult to get
into) but it doesn't look as cool to my eye.

My first thought on seeing the costume was that it looked as if it had been put together at a thrift store, and, hey, according to the article, that's exactly how she creates it! Also, the jacket may be cutting-edge fashion for today, but it was back in the mod 60's as well, when the Carnaby Street fashion world all fell in with short little military style jackets. The seams along both front panels follow the lines of those on the Stephanie Brown costume, making this less of a "new look" I think that the creators hope, especially when we're concurrently hit with the more extreme looks of the Earth 2 Helena Wayne Batgirl in occasional flashbacks and the Ame-Comi variants in their own title (if that's still running.)
Creators don't seem to realize that a "New Look!" these days is just one more "New Look!" to throw onto the pile. They no longer stand out. They blend in. Not only that but they may as well trumpet across the cover, "All of This Will Be Incredibly Short-Lived!!" and "We're In It For the Short Run!!"

The costume isn't what catches my eye here, it is the fact
that Barbara looks like she lost a few years and is now 16
years old.

The next big DC mini-series, Donna Troy and Batgirl team-up to figure out "Who Is Barbara Gordon?" Commissioner Gordon's daughter? Niece? Gotham City head librarian, requiring a lengthy degree? Member of the House of Representatives, requiring her to be at least 35 years old*? Older, mentor figure to a raft of legacy Batgirls and teams of super agents or young, upscale neighborhood hipster with a "Veronica Mars, Girls" vibe? Perhaps the Dark Queen could simply have her step out of a magic Bat-Signal?
*This part of her career happened shortly after Supergirl met Prez over in her book, so maybe all age requirements for serving public office were suspended at DC for a while...

I can't say I'm overly fond of the new Batgirl costume(I'm rather fond of Yvonne Craig's costume) But I could live with the new design except for those boots. They make no sense on a "Batman" character.
