One criticism I've read (possibly here, somewhere) is that Chris Reeve's Superman costume looks "dated".
There are plenty of elements in every Reeve SUPERMAN film that look plenty dated. The costume is definitely not one of them. (The same can be said for the George Reeves series.)

One criticism I've read (possibly here, somewhere) is that Chris Reeve's Superman costume looks "dated".•• Unfortunately, Reeves' costume was made from Spandex, or something very much like it, which was the automatic super suit material in the 70s (and for some even to this day), even tho the effect upon the body is not at all what superhero costumes "really" look like.* So, altho all the details of Reeves' costume are the timeless standards, that one element screams 1970s!!. ––––––––––– * Of the many things I have come to dislike in the work of Alex Ross, his constant fallback on Spandex is close to top of the list.

The leg pouch is sort of a variant on the utility belt, so doesn't seem out of place to me. |

That's probably a call back to her original costume which featured a large pouch on her belt.

The new costume seems to spring from the cosplay mentality that's become so popular. A 'reality based' costume can easily be replicated by some fan (who probably don't read the comics anyways).
I've always seen costumes as visual shorthand, and one of the cool aspects of the super-hero genre. Drawing someone wearing a 'realistic' costume only serves to underline that super-heroes are fantasy, and not 'real', dammit!

I agree that high heels are not practical but the combat boots seem too big and cumbersome.

Batgirl hasn't worn high heels at all in the New 52 era, so that seems like an outdated argument.

Batgirl is now a part of Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation?

I just hope those combat boots are steel toed....
Oh, and be glad the designer isn't an obvious Rob Liefeld fan. Or she'd have even more straps and pouches.

I'm surprised they haven't put Spider-man in combat boots yet.
Combat boots and large pouches never made sense for any character who's schtick is based on acrobatic martial arts.

Shh, don't give them any ideas!
I feel the art of costume design was lost when the creators tried to make them NOT look like superhero costumes.

Using current fashion trends for superhero costumes is usually a bad idea. Nothing say dated like fashion.
This looks a lot more contemporary than the New 52 redesign did. Too much piping and vents and armor plates and other weird nineties excess on Jim Lee's designs for my taste. If trends move away from this Batgirl redesign, I'm confident that it will be changed and updated as need be.
I'm really of the opinion that this is a big step in the right direction for Batgirl, and for the New 52 in general. Most of the books at the relaunch had the exact same tone and feel, with every superhero wearing a bland Jim Lee-ified costume which made everyone look kind of interchangeable (nervously waiting to see if Plastic Man shows up in the New 52, since he's just about the only superhero who's proven completely resistant to costume changes throughout his 70-plus year history).
The new look Batgirl shows some personality and will undoubtedly tap some of that Captain Marvel/Ms. Marvel audience, and I'm hoping we'll see some more DC titles that leap off the racks in months to come.
