I was viewing, again, Weird Al's WORD CRIMES, over on YouTube, and scrolled down to the comments. A mistake. Almost at once, I found myself despairing of, and for, the human race.

The song is an anthem for "grammar Nazis"? The first time I heard the word "Nazi" appended to something it was in the context of people who try to force their own views upon others, as in "Fashion Nazis," for instance.

Now it's attached to people who want things done correctly.

That's just wrong! Using that word (name) to convey anythiing in a positive manner is an insult.

That's because to some people, correct is just a matter of opinion. Like the Big Bang Theory is "just a theory".

Mistake 1: reading YouTube comments.

Mistake 2: trying to make sense of YouTube comments.

What's disturbing is the fervor with which some people cling to their "right" to be wrong!

It is the "you're not the boss of me" approach. I am free to be fat, drunk
and stupid. Makes me sad.

One of the funniest (and most clever) videos I've seen in a long time.

The gap between current generations and the "greatest generation" continues to widen.

The Youtube comment sections are notoruous as the verbal and intellectual toilet of the internet. Some of it is legitimate ignorance, some of it is done on purpose to stir the pot, because people are like that. Someone who has an English major will hop on and spout grammar nazi crap just to be ironic.

I've had to rein in my knee jerk reaction to advise people of proper grammatical usage. It always leads to accusations of arrogance and elitism. "You understood what I said," being the most used justification for improper grammar. At this point, all I do is continue writing as properly as I can and hope it leads by example.

The other thing that undermines the argument for proper grammar are those memes where an entire statement has words in which the letters are either transposed or have numbers in place of letters just to prove that (a) you're smart; or (b) that the brain allows you to understand the statement despite the errors. "See," they say. "What's the point of grammar if you can understand it anyway?"

>Urgh< ***

***Edited to minimize the effects of irony. :P

I believe the standard usage is to imply a fervor similar to that of a totalitarian d!ck, like a Nazi, not that "Nazi" is related to "good". It's still stupid.
