Response to Anthony:

"Of course they do"? Do you mean "of course they are"?

``````
I mean  " Of course they do." As in they DO get drawn that way.
``````

 Really? Superheroes drawn with big packages in mainstream comics? Haven't seen it.````````````````

 Well if you haven't seen it I guess it doesn't happen. Or you haven't seen everything. I wonder which is more likely to be correct?

Your photo isn't sexist or pornographic. It also has nothing to do with superhero comics. Michaelangelo's David has nothing to do with Mike Deodato drawing Wonder Woman in a thong in the pages of Wonder Woman circa 1994.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
I guess I'll have to draw you a map.
'David' like comic books is a work of art. It is a nude statue of a man. What makes it not pornographic?  Would it be the implied context of the piece of art?  If that is the deciding factor of the work in question. Than those Superhero drawings get judged by the same criteria.
I've never really seen that as comparing like with like. The female equivalent of that, if you'll excuse the crude vernacular for one moment, would be artists drawing bulging camel toe like versions of a superheroine crotch. Which doesn't tend to happen.
What does tend to happen though is that superheroes are often drawn with bulging chests and arm muscles. Which according to my female friends is generally what they'll notice about a guys physique. (That and the behind ironically enough..) They've certainly never told me that they'd go looking at a guys genitals. Hmm..maybe I just know the wrong type of girls! ;)
I don't hear a big outcry against the unrealistic male physiques by many either.  They do everything they do with women with men in advertising and media.  Chiseled good looks, tall, tiny waists, big muscles...how is that ANY different than the movement to "save" girls from unrealistic portrayals in the media?
Most Superheroes drawn by most comic artists are drawn unrealistically. That's how it is suppose to be done. They are bigger than life characters. They are suppose to represent some ideal. Be it good or bad. They aren't suppose to represent the average person on the street.
Compare comic heroes and villains to the gods of myth. Now ask yourself are they more or less sexist and pornographic?
It's really all about intent. The whole purpose for getting this artist to do these covers is to appeal to the large sect of Marvel fans that spend half their time looking at porn. I simply don't get this. Why do you need this sort of thing when you can Google all the naked girls you want, for free? I have nothing against nudity, but I do think it's absurd that this sort of thing still works to increase sales. It's, quite frankly, embarrassing.
This is what Spider Woman's ass used to look like before creepy sexuality was introduced into the mix, and gosh darn it, I think we should get back to this!
A little revisionist history there. Go back and take a look at the first couple of dozen Spider-Woman covers from the original series. For some reason, Infantino was in a kinky mood. Lots and lots of butt shots (why show your main character from behind all the time?), bondage covers, images of Spider-Woman being dominated and physically overpowered by men. Creepy sexuality has surrounded the character from the beginning. Not quite the kink-fest Marston's WW was, but up there.
The success of Superhero films, will end up being the worst thing to ever happen to the superhero medium, and it's fanbase ever.
Once Superheroes got popular, and all these outside people, with their own agendas started to enter into the club, the club members who were there in the beginning started changing their attitude. They started acquiescing to the outsiders' demands, even though these outside people don't really buy comics, or care about the medium. They just want to inflict their views on something that's popular. It won't be popular for long.
Stan Lee thought going to Hollywood would save the Superheroes..
It's going to end up killing it.
it blows me away that folks don't understand context.
Regardless, I stumbled upon this today. I equate the bounced light off of Shazam's unit the same as drawing a woman's camel toe. It's just not needed in a comic book illustration. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.
(Yes, I call him Shazam, not Captain Marvel)
Though I take your point that Spider-Woman actually doing something is more interesting than just standing there posing, it doesn't sound like it would be a very interesting story.
It depends on your imagination, but I thought of a quick human interest story to accompany that cover. I'm sure if you thought about it, you could come up with something cool. Many fanboys come up with elaborate stories, based on bad plotholes to make a movie seem better than it actually is, so it's possible, LOL
Mr. Byrne -
At any point in your career, have you ever been editorially directed to 'tone down' or even 'ramp up' the sexiness of a character in a panel?
If so, how'd you feel about it?
