I have to admit that this is one of the coolest things Marvel has put out in a good while. I'm sure it'll cost a small fortune, given that this is Marvel, but I'm sorely tempted to get it.

Looks cool. Neat design. But considering I have many of these volumes already and it's going for $300 on Amazon ($200 off the list price of $500) I think I'll pass.

It does look like great fun.

That page led me to this:

Now, I'm all for Marvel celebrating Howard the Duck, but this page all but overtly praises the awful 1986 Howard movie.

Sorry, but I cry WAUGH!

The set looks great, but I'll wait for it to be even cheaper a year or two from now.

Sorry for the thread drift, but that article about the Howard the Duck movie is tripe. "Misunderstood" is not an appropriate description of the movie's lack of acceptance n the mainstream. And noting it's following based purely on the strength of interviews with the people involved with its production is laughable.

HOWARD THE DUCK was a fun comic. I enjoyed it greatly, in the Seventies. I even auditioned for the pencilling gig. But it was never anybody's idea of a hit. Except the people who read it. In a not uncommon phenomenon, Howard's fans assumed his title was a smash, and rumblings about anti-Gerber conspiracies roiled around fandom when the book was canceled.

I'm sure George Lucas was one of those fans. Can't imagine any other reason he would sink millions of dollars into a project with such limited ACTUAL appeal. (And the movie itself isn't really half bad. It translated the comic to the screen as well as the technology of the time permitted.)

But the harsh reality is, Howard was a flash in the pan. Anyone not totally enamored of the character should have been able to see that.

Best thing about this Masterworks set is they are finally releasing NOT BRAND ECHH. First with this set then individually next April!

Depending on the printing, I would definitely be on board for NOT BRAND ECCH! But if it's slick paper, forget it. DC did their Kirby library perfectly. Spoiled me for anything else!

Hey, Howard was popular enough that he got thousands of write-in votes for president in 1976!

(Granted, I don't know how many thousands...it could've been, like, two...)

I think HOWARD getting canceled was less of an offense than the fact that those Bill Mantlo-written issues ever saw print.

Not to speak ill of someone who cannot defend himself, but those Mantlo DUCK stories evoke his tenure on ALPHA FLIGHT. Bill had a curious way of singling out exactly what SHOULDN'T be done with a character or title --- and then DOING it!

(Bill was also the one who gave us Spider-Man travelling thru space and time, tho it's really the editor who should take the heat for letting stories more appropriate to the Silver Age Batman find their way into MARVEL TEAM-UP.)

Yep. And he was on THE INCREDIBLE HULK for so. damn. long.

Then again his stories generally did less permanent damage to characters than many of the current crew at Marvel.
