JB, I found where you mentioned that the Doom mask on the cover
was a photographed prop. I was wondering, do you know the origin of
it and what it's eventual fate was?

It's probably the closest I've ever seen to a three dimensional
construction of Doom's mask that looked correct.

Marvel had a number of costumes created so characters could make personal appearances. They were pretty cheesy. (The Inflatable Hulk had to be seen to be believed!) The average convention costume parade produced more impressive outfits.

One of the "professional" costumes commissioned by Marvel was Doctor Doom. When I saw it, I had the idea of using the mask -- the best part -- for a photo cover.

I have no idea what eventually happened to any of those costumes.

Thank you for the answer. I remember getting that issue and thinking
how cool yet kinda creepy it looked.

I think I found a picture of that costume, along with most of Marvel's
others.

And now I won't be able to un-see those costumes.

Curse you, Stephen.

Ha! Yeah, the Thing and Hulk costumes are pretty hysterical. But, that
Doom mask is better than anything I've seen from the Tim Story films.

I would imagine these costumes are from that very collection...

"Because we didn't want to pay an artist for drawing a cover month!"

I wouldn't be surprised if Shooter and the higher-ups were hoping those would catch on...

By the time the photographer was paid, the models, the cost of processing and other production expenses, I doubt that much, if anything, was "saved" by the use of photo covers.

••

Those are of a later vintage. That's not the Inflatable Hulk, for instance. The Inflatable Hulk was literally a balloon with a guy inside it! (And only from the waist up!)

As bad as some of those look to my eyes, I can imagine the joy a little kid
who loves superheroes might have encountering the Hulk or Ben Grimm!

Oh, absolutely! I have been happy to witness some of that joy firsthand.

A sad reminder, now, of a time when Marvel actually concerned itself with children and new audiences, instead of trying to dig deeper and deeper into the wallets of an aging, shrinking fan base.
