Happy birthday to Gene Colan. A marvelous talent and more importantly a marvelous human being.

September 1, 1926- June 23, 2011. He would've been 88 today.
Happy Birthday.

A shame that he didn't live to see the Falcon become a well-known character. And, of course, the Guardians of the Galaxy (admittedly, not his Guardians).

Happy birthday, master of light and shadow.

I was just reading my Tomb of Dracula Omnibus. He was perfect for this title. Also loved his Daredevil.

Without his work, I might not have become a comics fan, a Batman fan, a vampire fan, or a horror writer. I'll always be glad I once got to have a conversation with him and tell him how much his work meant to me.

While he did a fine Iron Man, Captain Mar-Vell, Sub-Mariner, Avengers, Brother Voodoo or Doctor Strange he's still THE Daredevil and Dracula artist to me!

Met Gentleman Gene a few times at SDCC and attended special event at
the Cartoon Art Museum where they had an exhibit of his art and he
received the Sparky Award. A great talent, I miss seeing new art by
Gene.

HOWARD THE DUCK is one of my favorite comics and no matter how much I love Steve Gerber, I don't think there's any way that book would have worked without Colan's "flowing realism"!

If only he had also drawn Gerber's SON OF SATAN and OMEGA THE UNKNOWN! They might have really gone somewhere, instead of being two "odd cancelled 70's comics."

Glad he made it to BATMAN over at DC, but I would have liked to see his version of SUPERMAN in more than just that short PHANTOM ZONE mini.

The "flow " of Colan's line worked so well with Dracula.

Happy Birthday " Gentelman Gene "

For some reason, whenever I think of Gene Colan, this great image
from Captain America springs to mind:

As a youth, I tended to put Gene Colan in the same art pool as Joe Kubert. However, I preferred Gene because of his interesting angles and shading, almost as if he did not need a colorist to make the art pop.

Big Gene the Dean fan.  Definitely the definitive DD and Dracula artist for me, too.  A lot of inkers had trouble with his work but as soon as you see his gorgeous pencils, you quickly realize what a towering talent this guy was.
