The History of Labor day link

To many people forget why we celebrate this day and the sacrifice of our forbearers.

John,
Unfortunately thats not the whole story. Ever wonder why the United
States doesn't celebrate Labor Day or International Workers' Day on
May 1st like many other countries?
International Workers' Day was created to honor the Haymarket
Massacre in 1886. Workers protested in cities in the United States to
demand an 8 hour workday. Most American worked 18-20-hour
workdays. Workers were meeting to plan protests in Chicago, police
showed up and beat and shot at the group at random. Six workers
were killed by police. Next day a peaceful protest in Haymarket
Square, someone setoff a bomb killing a police officer then the police
opened fire on the crowd about a dozen died.
Workers movements around the world adopted May 1st as
International Workers' Day. But the US doesn't celebrate Labor Day
on May 1st but in September.
In 1894 there was a workers strike in Chicago which spread ti include
American Railroad Union. That stopped much of the trains in detroit,
in response President Grover Cleveland called in the Army to
suppress the strikes. Ended up 26 people were killed. This outraged
labor and President Cleveland then proposed Labor Day as a national
holiday.
He worried having Labor Day be to May 1 would encourage
Haymarket-like protests and communist and socialist movements that
had backed the May 1 commemorations around the globe.
