The Nautilus Live expedition came across a purple siphonophore back in July of this year and posted footage. I stumbled across the article and the first thing I thought was how this might fit into the intelligent design teachings. The footage is quite interesting and the creature, or colony if you will, is straight out of science fiction.

I asked God about this, and He said "Well, you know, I'd been hard at it for six days, and I was kind of tired...."

That thing is freaky-cool. Also, its fun to say Siphonophore.

Nice.  Its (their?) nose looks like a weed whacker I once almost cut my finger off using back in the 80s.

An organism like this, one that finds a way to survive within its environment, only strengthens my belief in evolution. This is literally a tribe of creatures surviving in extreme pressure and temperature. As a result of this link I have stumbled upon a number of other very strange undersea creatures just clicking through other links. The sea pig and its parasites are wild.

Eric>> only strengthens my belief in evolution.<<

No poke at you intended in any way, Eric.  But Believers like to point to statements like that to show that Evolution is just another kind of Belief.  Like they are trying to co-opt the word.  The fault, of course, is totally theirs for having such an impractically narrow definition, and assuming everyone else does too.  I usually tell them, I don't have any Belief in their sense of the word, I have confidence based either on evidence or experience.
My confidence that gravity works hasn't let me down yet.  Or, always has, depending on how you look at it.

Very cool link by the way.  It's hard to think alien life could look any stranger than a lot of the stuff we have on Earth.

As someone who is occasionally called upon to design extraterrestrials, I find it frustrating when weird critters turn up on Earth. Their evolution has been a process uniquely configured by conditions here. When scientists find another odd one, I think There's another alien we won't be finding!

I'm very careful to avoid saying I believe IN Evolution. Or anything else Science has to offer. Understanding and accepting what Science has to teach us is not an act of faith. There is no "because I said so" aspect to Science. Not real Science, anyway.

I do see the inherent danger in using the word "belief" and even "evolution". It seems better to say I appreciate how life adapts to the challenges of environment. I am completely amazed by the siphonophore and the pronunciation. :)
