...it's getting to be like the only thing notable about each shooting is the details. For instance here a grandfather, 51, killed his daughter and her six children ranging from three months to 10 years old. Otherwise it's just the same old (sad) story.

As a Dad that's just an inconceivable to me. Very sad.

We can wait now for the NRA to tell us this would not have happened if the children had been armed.

The only thing a bad parent with a gun fears is a good child with a gun.

Not that it matters much to some people, but he was not legally allowed access to firearms. This would be one of the few cases where the NRA would tell you he shouldn't have a gun.

 QUOTE:
Don Spirit had a criminal record in Tampa, where he was arrested in 1990 on a felony fugitive warrant. Other arrests include misdemeanor battery, drug charges and depriving a child of food and shelter.

In 2001, Spirit pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after he fatally shot his 8-year-old son in the head in a hunting accident, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

The story said that on a walk through the woods with Kyle and an older son, Spirit pointed out rust on the muzzle of his rifle. The rifle fired, hitting Kyle in the head, according to the Osceola County Sheriff's Office.

Spirit, who also was convicted in 1998 for felony possession of marijuana, was sentenced to three years in prison for the shooting, the Sentinel added. He was released in 2006.

But how did he get the gun? If it was at a gun show which in many states
have no rules about background checks or how lax is the gun purchase
laws in florida? And NRA are against most background checks which
may have stopped the guy from purchasing the gun.

Mr. Peck, he would have had to have gotten it from a private party. The background check, or NICS is a federal law. No lawful arms dealer can sell a firearm without the proper paperwork which requires the background check. States don't get a choice on that. As for private sellers that's a whole different matter and even if there were laws against it I doubt it could be enforced. Lastly, before I get accused of it, the last thing I'd ever do is support the NRA. While I am a competitive shooter I really don't agree with the NRA.

"He shouldn't have had a gun" is something upon which the NRA is likely to seize in support of their claims that we should all have guns. After all, no matter what we do "the bad guys will still be able to get guns."

But, once again, in the end none of this matters. Sandy Hook demonstrated conclusively that the cowards in Washington will never stand up to the gun lobby.

The linked story doesn't say what he shot them with. Rifles and shotguns aren't registered, only handguns, so you can buy the former on the secondary market with little to no paperwork in most states.

Mr De Young, Rifles and Shotguns are very much registered. They fall under the same rules as handguns. The only difference would be what they call NFA , which would cover things like Short Barrel Rifles, Suppressors and Full Auto rifles. NFA items are even more tracked and require special paperwork.

Guns for sperm.  Guns for eggs.  Guns for all, short, fat, skinny, or
tall.

Brian,Yes private parties sell at gun shows alot. So thats what I was
referring to.
The "gun show loophole," most states do not require background
checks for firearms purchased at gun shows from private individuals -
- federal law only requires licensed dealers to conduct checks.

Gun Show
Background Checks States Law

And Florida is in RED, doesn't have any background checks
requirements for firearms purchased at gun shows from private
individuals .
