One of the smaller advantages to my occasional bouts of insomnia, is that I can sit in the back yard in near total darkness, all the neighbors outside lights off, and the nearest city far enough away that its light pollution is only a glow below the tops of the trees. This is what I was doing just now, marveling at the starry vista, when something streaked across the edge of my vision, and I turned my head to see a meteor slice across the southern sky, tracking west to east. A big one, too (unless it was VERY close!). It calved into at least three pieces as I watched. Hope none of them fell on anyone!

--- or perhaps it was the initial wave of an invasion fleet, and you saw the landing craft shoot off a recon-probe...

Enjoy your description of that moment... if you ever wrote a novel, I'd pick it up ;)!

He's written two or three! One of which I have my eye on.

Fear Book and Whipping Boy are the two I'm aware of, but I think JB has a third as well.

There's also a Wonder Woman novel, "Gods and Goddesses."

I have the same view in my back yard, not much light pollution or neighbors and a nice view of the Big Dipper from my patio in the summertime. I like to just stand out there at night, marvel at the stars and listen to the frogs. I keep thinking of getting a hot tub to sit in out there, that would be extra nice.

I once saw one at dusk. The sun had the sky all lit up, but this thing was big and visible. I'm used to seeing them streak quickly across the sky, but this one move at about twice the speed of a high flying jetliner. Sure was neat to watch.

The Perseid meteor shower in August can be pretty great if you're willing to go outside for a few hours doing nothing but laying down and looking up. It kinda sucked this year because of the full moon, but next year is a new moon, so that's pretty awesome if you can check it out.
