I guess it really comes down to the Apple iPhone6 or the Samsung Galaxy S5. But, there also the new Amazon Fire Phone which is the reason for this. The Fire Phone didn't make the anticipated splash and went from being another expensive phone to a free phone with a two year agreement.
Being a cheaper route to take, is it a good one?
Does anybody have one?
If so, what are the advantages and disadvantages to having it?
Can anybody who has it, recommend it?

I just recently entered the age of smart-phones. I bought a Samsung Galaxy S5. I can't say how it measures up to other phones, but so far I have been happy with it.

I just got my very first smart-phone a few short months ago. A Samsung Galaxy S4. Certified pre-owned, free with a 2 year contract from AT&T. I love AT&T's service, so that was no problem. And certified pre-owned means someone bought it brand new and returned it within two weeks.I'm very happy with it I shouldn't have waited so long, but that's what makes me a "late adopter".

I'm biased as I've been an Apple guy since college, but the new iPhone 6 is awesome! "Bendgate" is a bunch of hooey...it's a fantastic device.
Can't tell you a thing about the Fire Phone...sorry!

The Fire phone is pretty intriguing, but if it's anything like the Fire tablets, you're going to be pretty much stuck with Amazon's way of thinking and a subset of Android apps for a long time. I get the impression that it's mostly a device designed to encourage people to shop more.
I just upgraded to an iPhone 6 over the weekend. It's a real jump from my 5! The rounded edges remind me a lot of my beloved original model.

Thanks for the info guys. Josh, I'll check into the certified pre-owned option. More and more the s4 sounds like what I'm looking for anyway as I don't take a lot of pictures.

If you're an "Apple Guy," I'd get the iPhone. Your Apple ID will sync right up with the iPhone.
If you are considering an Android phone, you will need to have a Gmail account. If you already have one, once again it will sync with your Droid. Gmail addresses work with iPhone as well, including getting your contacts imported from your Gmail contact list, but to use the iPhone App Store, you'll have to create an "Apple ID" with your existing email address. And there are a bunch of Google Apps available for the iPhone as well.
I personally prefer Apple iDevices because they are faster than most Droids I've seen, but it all comes down to personal taste and what you use the phone for outside of the basic functions.
I haven't really looked at the "Fire Phone," but if the newer Kindle devices are any indication, you may need an Amazon ID and it may be limited in its features. I'd look for online reviews if this is a consideration.
I'd stay with iOS or Android for simplicity's sake, since when you get a new device in the future your data should transfer without a hitch.

I picked up the iPhone 6 (upgrade from the iPhone 4) and I really like it. I have never been a fan of the Android Operating System and I just don't like the look of it. I will probably have this one for the next four years, since I don't really upgrade phones much.

Just to add, everyone here in China wants the iPhone 6+ but it was just too big. It is quite funny on the subway here, seeing tiny girls talking on these massive phones. Sometimes looks like they are holding an iPad to their head.

I have been so pleased with my Galaxy S4, that I am already sold on the S5. Though I did take the new iPhone into serious consideration, but I am not as big of a fan of iTunes for file transfers. I have always preferred being able to do direct transfers from PC to phone. I mention this in case this has changed at all.
I do love what the Kindle Phone offers, but since it is AT&T only, I can't go that route at the moment since the service in the Des Moines area is so spotty.(Its the same reason I had to stay away from the iPhone in the beginning and probably while i have always been an Android guy)
