I re-read Grell's GREEN ARROW run recently and was shocked by how conservative it was. It was clearly of the 1980s/Reagan/Rambo era.
I point this out not to bash conservatism but it is *very* far removed from the character Denny O'Neil "revamped" in the 1970s. This was the leftie who went after slumlords.
There was a scene in Grell's run when Oliver explains why he's Green Arrow and he talks about the criminals who "walk on technicalities" and who "escape justice." It was closer to the Punisher than to Denny's Green Arrow.
I thought Denny's Oliver was a natural progression from the stories he told (losing his fortune, as a start) but Grell's seemed to come out of nowhere. And it was so clearly John Sable with a goatee.
BTW, in the quest for "realism," there's nothing realistic about a costumed vigilante killing perps and not having all of law enforcement coming after him. And Oliver had no secret identity at that point!
Perhaps I'm wrong, but I always thought that once Batman took a life, Jim Gordon would be the first to bring him in.
