I like Cumberbatch for this.  He may be a little young, but assuming sequels, I think I'd rather him age into the correct range than out of it.

One great thing is his voice!  Should make the incantations sound awesome!

I am wondering if they will do an origin story, or jump in.  Either way I like the casting of Cumberbatch.

Be nice if they "leaked" it in flashbacks over several movies. Strange is, after all, supposed to be a man of mystery.

I like the casting but it probably means that he won't be able to play
Gaiman's Morpheus(he's my choice for the role, not saying he was ever
up for it).

When they introduced him in STRANGE TALES they didn't start with an origin story, so I don't see why it would be obligatory.

Batman didn't begin with his origin story either, but it seems nearly impossible to do anything with the character anymore without it.

Feige has just stated that Cumberbatch isn't confirmed at this point. However, he's always been my favourite to play Doctor Strange. Aside from great acting chops, his eyes and face shape has Strange written all over them.

I would like to hear Cumberbatch say "By the hoary hosts of Hoggath!"

I didn't want to comment on Cumberbatch until something looked a
little more concrete. I think he's the best choice out of anyone
mentioned so far.

Yeah, I'd be fine with him. Gotta say I'm surprised at some of the more negative reactions. Especially folk who are upset that it might not be somebody like Idris Elba because apparently Strange was one of the best opportunities for 'reverse whitewashing?!?' (Eh? Is that really where we are now? What's wrong with being true to the comics?)

I would love a movie not to start out with an origin story. It would be a
nice twist.

I agree Stephen, Cumberbatch is better choice than the other candidates.  I'll pay to see it.

The director tweeted out a piece of artwork from the Shamballa GN today. As this article points out, if that story is the basis of the movie, it would serve nicely to tell the origin story in flashbacks rather than make an origin movie per se.

He actually pencilled a few issues of Dr. Strange, didn't he? I know he did some covers. Looked really nice, as I recall.

An inker that can actually draw. Wotta concept.

Whatever happened to those guys like Green and Wiacek?

I agree, showing flashbacks would be a great way to go as (as long as they don't give away all of his origin, but just enough to explain his persona and his relation to the main plot and no more). Also, if they can find a new cinematic way to show flashbacks within the structure of the movie, if they could pull that off successfully, that would add a lot to the movie by avoiding story tropes that have been done to death at this point.

I'm very pleased with the news that Cumberbatch is going to be playing Dr. Strange.

That said, I've recently learned that there is a small group of rather immature trolls about that think his last name to be far more amusing that it really is. "His ancestors must have farmed cucumber patch's! Ha! Ha!" Cute. I just hope something so asinine doesn't ruin the buzz for this movie or puts any sort of damper on the process.

Agreed - plus it's easier to age him with makeup to make up
the age difference at first than to have to try to make him
look younger later on.

What is all this talk about Cumberbatch being too YOUNG? The man is in his mid-30's! He's about the right age, in my view.

Not really, Matt. Doctor Strange, as shown in his origin, was a famous and well established surgeon. That puts a whole bunch of years in medical school, plus working his way up thru hospital hierarchies, plus building that killer rep once he got to the top, ALL before he had the accident that sent him to the bottom -- AND put him down there for years, too!

Even imagining some kind of Dougie Houser-esque vunderkind, Strange is not likely to have been in the position he was, pre-accident, and still be in his mid thirties. Even mid-forties would be pushing it!

I don't know. My ex brother-in-law was a famous and well established podiatric surgeon before he was 30. He had a very successful practice in Chicago. Alongside that, he was the team podiatrist for the White Sox. He was a consultant for the Bulls.  He had clients from the Bears and the Blackhawks. He was big enough that he was able to pay off all of his student loans in 18 months. He was published many times. If he wasn't so nice, he could be Doctor Strange, MD (add the mustache and he could look the part). Anyway, mid-30s doesn't seem too out of line for someone to be Dr Strange. It might be a bit young for the roll of Sorcerer Supreme. I guess it depends on what part of his career the movie starts in.

I wonder if he was one of the guys who consulted on my injury a few years
back?

(Brian's ex BiL, not Stephen Strange)
