All things considered, I wish the majority of those stories had never happened. So if Marvel is telling us being familiar with them will add to our enjoyment of something...
That something must be absolute SHIT.

I am sitting here waiting for this (BLEEP!)ing thing to utterly collapse from under its own weight. Trust me, there are times when I do think that the mainstream comics industry ending would be a good thing. As it stands, I'm no longer considering buying anything until the dust settles over there.

Tried a few times to have my stepson read Secret Wars because he reads so many graphic novels (and it's hard to keep up with him). He is nine and he wouldn't do it. That tells you something right there.
Has he read many/any comics from that era or earlier? Secret Wars is pretty clunky. Probably my least favorite Mike Zeck art of that decade, really simplified characterizations, clunky dialogue...I don't think it holds up very well at all. There were some inspired tie-ins and follow-up storylines in other Marvel books at the time, but Secret Wars always felt like a dumbed-down version of mid-eighties Marvel.

Every do often a character gets a title
and we scratch our heads wondering why.
One theory was that to maintain trademarks
they had to release those titles. If
true, I wonder if that applies here.

Has he read many/any comics from that era or earlier? Secret Wars is pretty clunky.
He's read early FF (about 21-40), Teen Titans, Simonson Thor, Stern/Byrne Cap, and first issues of most of the important Marvel characters all from that era or earlier. Since he's only nine I'm waiting a little longer for Miller Daredevil.
Recently, my collection of Batman:TAS, JRJR Spider-Man, and Spider-Man Chapter One (he loved that). I'll probably break down and get him 41-100 of FF and possibly introduce JB FF (although I might hold back on the JB FF until summer). Any other suggestions from the 80s or earlier? I do have Marvel Unlimited but he seems to prefer paper.

Andy, I'd start him on early Buscema/Palmer Avengers and keep going
till he hits them again. After there second run ends, I wouldn't let him
read anymore Avengers until he gets to the Busiek/ Perez series.
I also remember enjoying the Zeck and Neary runs on Captain
America. In fact, I enjoyed the book a lot up to about issue 350. In
there you get the Serpent Society, Scourge, and the Captain/ John
Walker storyline.

The bottom line, here, is that this all represents two of the biggest things wrong with Marvel and DC: "creators" who are unwilling to create ("I don't want to just hand them the next Spider-Man!"), and the continued pandering to a graying audience.Once again the younger readers, the ones who used to be the life's blood of the industry before we drove them away, are cut from the equation.

Mr. Byrne, why don't you return to Marvel, team up with Claremont, and show them how its done? Those sonsofbitches have been balling it up and tearing it down for going on two decades now and I've had it.
