Thanks, Paul. Please pet your cat for me.

I know there is no afterlife for Kringle, as much as I want there to be: I think that is what is hurting me the most. She is just gone.

I know the feeling. My wife and I had do do the same with her 15 year old friend a month ago and I know it's sooner rather than later for my nearly 17 year old girl. I've had many pets and it never gets any easier. One day at a time.

I appreciate the kind words.

This is a kind of loss that I've never had to deal with before. Kringle was the first and only pet for whom I've ever had full responsibility.

Throughout my childhood, my family had several cats and dogs. My folks never told me when they died; they kept me from ever finding out, and just told me, "oh he must have just wandered off". I know they were trying to protect me, but the net effect was to cause me to question why my pets kept getting lost.

I learned their true fates much later, while I was in college. My cousin, who has a wicked sense of humor, quipped to me upon the passing of my grandmother, "Your parents didn't tell you she just wandered off, did they?"

Sorry to ramble. It just hurts so much.

I'm feeling for you here, Lloyd. We lost 3 dogs last year...2 elder dogs (13
& 12) and a puppy. We have a 3 year old from our original pack (his name
is Lloyd, too) still with us and just got a puppy last April, but it's just not
the same.

Losing a pet just sucks...they are so much a part of your life and when
they're gone...well it's like you said, they're just gone. It gets better...that
hole never goes away but it does start to hurt a little less.

I've always sympathized with people who've had to make the decision to put their pets to sleep to prevent them from suffering, but I never realized how truly awful it was.

Her vet, a wonderful lady who specializes in elderly cats, has done much to give Kringle a long and healthy life. She was very helpful and supportive through the process.

I know I made the right decision: Kringle's health had been failing for a while and her quality of life was diminishing very rapidly. And yet, I keep second-guessing it. I now wish I had just waited a little longer, just to have here her a bit more. Damn this hurts. Will it really get better?
