So I've gotta be familiar with an X-Men comic from 1981 and an FF comic from 1983 in order to "get" that dialogue.

Yeah, way to make comics for new readers in 2014, Marvel! A reference to a 31 year old comic panel!

So the whole idea that Doom is so proud and arrogant that the idea of some clown in a polka-dot bow tie and white suit could joke around with him like he's made of old tin cans makes him have a thought of killing the dude is just an act? One more reason that the characters are quite unrecognizable to me in today's Marvel.

Yeesh...

Slightly off-topic: JB's Doom is my favorite - second only to Kirby - but
Dave Cockrum (inked here by Joe Robenstein) was sure no slouch
when it came to drawing the good doctor.

Not to mention Arcade striking the match on Doom is also supposedly an in-joke to the 1978 BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Lt. Starbuck striking a match on a Cylon Centurion...

Just when I thought I was apathetic to current Marvel, Nathan proves me wrong. Torn between being annoyed and being angry.  Ugh.

My guess is the opposite of everyone else's. I don't think this is a product of too much research, I think its the result of no research and a foggy memory. I think that the writer of the newer book was trying to reiterate the whole idea of lousy appearances being malfunctioning Doombots, and remembered vaguely that scene with Arcade having something to do with it. Rather than going back and reading the actual stories, he just went with his half-remembered version.

Agree.  I'm going to err on the side of . "Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence."

If it turns out that it is a conscious retcon, it rather weakens the character.  Anybody know who wrote that?

The Doom talking in that new art could be a Doombot itself.
