I know it was 35 years ago -- but it is so interesting to see those notes from John Byrne on the original art.  I think this must be from the new IDW MARVEL COVERS edition, I have that one.

Makes me wish JB could remember his editorial conversations of the time.  I loved the blue suit, I wish it could have come back.

It's almost like JB was pushing for a "new look" for the team.  New Wolverine, New Angel, New Kitty costume, etc -- at least he won on the Wolverine.

Mr Byrne -- if you do happen to recall --- did you draw any of the interior pages with the intent they be colored like this?

What's the story on why Angel was colored red instead?

What's the story on why Angel was colored red instead?

••

Angel turned red when he joined the Champions -- tho not immediately. First, Marvel put him back into one of his godawful "pre-uniform" costumes. The thinking was, Black Widow and Ghost Rider were already in black, Angel in black would be too much. (Too much black! Lordy, this was a long time gone!)

Fans complained. Rightly so. The Neal Adams designed black and white costume was one of the coolest, and certainly the best Angel had had since his school uniform. So Marvel put him back in the Adams design -- sort of. They made the highlight red, to eliminate to "too much black" problem, and the boots and gloves yellow.

And I spent a goodly portion of my early years at Marvel campaigning to get Warren back in the proper suit!

So they just ignored every single one of your margin notes on the cover of #139.(?)  (Wow.  I never cease to be amazed at these stories.)  Who does the ignoring, the editor or the colorist?  Seems like it would be REAL easy for either to say, "Hey, Angel's costume is suppose to be red, surely John knows that.  Better get him on the phone to see what his line of thinking is."

It was very easy to ignore my notes, since I was 3000 miles away, and didn't see the finished job until it was published.

On those occasions when I flew down to NYC and hung around the Office for a while, things tended to come out more as I wanted. (Such as my name not being spelled "Burne" in the credits for the first issue of IRON FIST.)

Oddly when Angel reappeared with the X-Men in Marvel Fanfare a year or so
later, he was in the black costume.

Maybe Michael Golden was a squeakier wheel?

Golden colored it, IIRC.

I still feel strange calling the Adams costume "black". That's due to years of
conditioning, assuming for all that time that it was meant to be blue. It
wasn't until I came here that I learned otherwise.
