There is a bit of irony here.

The shooter was disqualified from buying any legal weapons in Canada, due to his criminal record and having no fixed address. The RCMP is currently trying to find out how he acquired the hunting rifle.

Here's the ironic part. Current prime minister Stephen Harper dismantled the national gun registry a few years ago. If the registry was still operational, it may have helped the RCMP track down the history of the weapon. I wonder if Harper is second guessing himself on that decision (probably not).

This story brought tears to my eyes.  So much goodness and so much evil, both in one event:

http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/canadian-parliament-shootin g/bystander-told-dying-canada-soldier-nathan-cirillo-you-are -loved-n232941

People like Barbara Winters are the reason why I will never allow the monsters like Michael Zehaf-Bibeau to distort my view of humanity.  Understand that evil does exist, yes.  Respond to it, of course.  But I will never lose sight of the Barbara Winters of the world that we touch and pass and smile at every day of our lives, nor will I ever lose sight of their kindness, love and generosity.

The hockey game tonight is going to be very interesting.  Not only is Ottawa having a little ceremony for the fallen soldier before the game, but Toronto and Montreal are co-ordinating with us for a shared event before their games as well.

They played the Canadian anthem at the Pittsburgh/Flyers game on Wednesday night. It was awesome.

Considering that 3 police offers were shot by a gunman in peaceful little ol' Moncton a few months ago, that signified to me this can happen anywhere.
