A lot has happened today in Canada's capital city. One armed forces officer (maybe 2) has been shot dead, one (of up to three) rogue shooters have been shot dead... and there is chaos everywhere. Here's a news link to the event

It's been a strange day. I was downtown when it happened waiting for a friend for a coffee meeting. I stayed away from the chaos and ended up seeing Steve Legge at his new office. Good thing too. I drive him home at noon to escape the city lockdown. My father in law is a Senator so the family is on edge.

I was going to meet up with some friends i haven't seen in months - definitely not the day to go downtown - i cancelled and stayed in the suburbs - most of them went home early.

A scary day. I don't normally associate terrorists and police carrying assault rifles and wearing armour with Canadian streets but paired with the attack on Monday, that is our new reality. Best wishes to the families of the murdered soldiers.

I like living in a country where people aren't reflexively distrustful or suspicious, and I hope this doesn't change.
But even so, I would have expected more vigilance around parliament. This whacko could have been carrying a large personal bomb instead of a rifle and there would have been a lot more deaths.
It looks like a radical terrorist act because of the current context with ISIS but I am reminded of the 14 female victims in the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre as well as the 3 deaths and 13 woundings in the 1984 attack on the National Assembly Building in Quebec City.
These Kamikaze Don Quijotes struck with an acute case of "pain of life" somehow see these actions as acts of personal life affirmations. The religious factor is just a connection their broken minds make that enables these acts.

The ISIS leaders who are actively trying to convert these vulnerable people over to their cause don't care a bit for how devout they are as new Muslims, or how well-schooled they are in the ways of Mohammed -- all they care about is their willingness and eagerness to become a martyr for THEIR cause.
They are tools of groups like ISIS -- the fact that they are recent converts and quite often not even associated with any mosques or the Mulsim community is irrelevant, because they are just weapons delivery systems for the radicals.
That doesn't change radical Muslim connection, and don't kid yourself into thinking that it does.
