A quick Google search for 'sold by the each' turned up a handful of uses on Amazon(in that case, the product on sale is copper lanterns).
There's also a Flickr photo of  a sign containing the phrase at some farmer's market(in an unidentified state), in which the uploader says that a lot of the vendors are Eastern European, and the term 'must' be a result of their lack of command of the English language.
I'd never seen 'by the each' on a supermarket sign until this thread.

So I can buy a single half of a frest cut strawberry, or does an each have a quantitative number value to it?

I think I want a "sold by the each" t-shirt now.

I am so tempted to throw up this Internet meme pic showing an old lady with a caption spelling out "WAT".

Yes, it's Japan, but you should see the English errors going on
all the time over there.

This example is pretty badly.

(I'm just going to throw in an edit to say "badly" is a joke)

This means that error made it past all the people that saw it at the agency, plus the art director, the store clerk that hung it, and the store manager.

I run a produce department for that very company. I have one of those hanging up. I'm embarrassed every time I look at it. I think it sounds horrible. But I, unfortunately, have no choice in the matter. You can't argue with corporate.

It's not quite at this level, but it's close:

Well, I bet my English must sound like that sometimes.
Reminds me of THIS song (it is just sarcastic, not intended as prejudice by the band):

You come into this country
You can't get real jobs
Boats and boats and boats of you
Go home you fuckin' slobs
Selling hot dogs on the corner
Selling papers in the street
Pushing, pulling, digging, sweating
Where you come from must be beat

[CHORUS]
You always make us wait
You're the ones we hate
You can't communicate
Speak English Or Die

You don't know what I want
You don't know what I need
Why must I repeat myself
Can't you fuckin' read?
Nice fuckin' accents
Why can't you speak like me
What's that dot on you head,
Do you use it to see??

You always make us wait
You're the ones we hate
You can't communicate
Speak English Or Die

[MOSH PART]

You always make us wait
You're the ones we hate
You can't communicate
Speak English Or Die

••

Thing about that song, and our society that it parodies, is we have created exactly the Nation the Founding Fathers wanted to avoid. John Adams especially campaigned for a single language to be spoken in the newly minted United States. He spoke several himself, so he didn't care which, as long as it was ONE. He, and other like thinkers, feared a "Balkanization" of America, if the original Chiclet sized states started out speaking different languages.

It is so sad, but so true, that cultural diversity all too often leads to cultural divisiveness.
