I'm guessing that is a word play off of "sold by the batch", except you buy the fruit in single cut pieces.
Or am I giving them too much credit?

Here is the part that will really make your head spin. That was most likely produced at an advertising agency. This means that error made it past all the people that saw it at the agency, plus the art director, the store clerk that hung it, and the store manager.

That's even worse than the usual ".99 cents" signs when it should be "$0.99" or "99 cents".

Yup.  Not used very often, but obviously a good conversation piece.
