I think Kirby was a fantastic comic book artist (Ditko
too), and I think Stan was an amazing writer (puns
intended); however, I think John Byrne's uncanny
talent in both areas makes him the Babe Ruth of comic
books, because he was that good at both story & art.

Babe Ruth, of course, is often considered the greatest
baseball player who ever lived because he was a great
slugger AND a great pitcher. We will never see
anything like that again, and I am of the opinion,
that while Frank Miller, for example, did both well
for a time and Walt Simonson maybe a little more for a
while longer, no other writer/artist did as much, as
well, and for as long as John Byrne.

Thoughts?

I don't know who else but JB can write, draw and come up with so many great adventures for so many iconic characters. His Superman stories are Superman stories, his FF stories are FF stories, etc. And then to have the artistic fortitude and sheer talent to to draw those stories? Damn. I think Curt Swan said, when he saw Christopher Reeve in Superman: The Movie, that Reeve was who Swan had been drawing for so long. When I look at a JB Superman, it IS Superman. The character, for me, still exists. No other artist can even come close to eliciting that kind of emotional response. The Babe Ruth of comics is right on, Ted.

Can't agree more.... JB has proven that he can have a long run on just about any DC or Marvel character and make it memorable and stay true to the character/s.... only other gents I feel that way about are George Perez and Alan Davis.

Jack Kirby should only ever be referred to as "The Jack Kirby of Comics."

That's the big thing. It takes a team like Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz
to come close to what JB has accomplished with as many characters.
Walt Simonson has done it with several characters but at times, I feel
like his rendering style doesn't fit with certain characters.

There are dozens of great writer-artists working in indie comics, and if you go back to folks like Will Eisner, Harvey Kurtzman, Jack Cole (and don't get me started on comic strip creators), a lot of your all-time great comic creators were solo acts.

That's exactly right, Stephen. JB is a creative team rolled into one person. Really remarkable.

I dunno.  That Mr. Byrne didn't also COLOR his books!  He's not Michelangelo.

Just kidding!!!

I agree with the sentiment.  But I do think Kirby was a pretty good writer.

Who I don't think is a great writer (especially in contrast with his almost singular artistic talent) is Neal Adams.  Neal is an average at best writer.

There was no better time in my youth, than eagerly awaiting JB's FF and Alpha Flight every month.

Mr. Byrne is the Wayne Gretzky of comics ( hey...I'm Canadian )!
