Wallace and Eric,
I'm pretty sure the 1978 Fantasic Four cartoon (with HERBIE) used the "Mag-net-to" pronunciation. Of course, THAT cartoon did nothing right so that may be a moot point, though Stan and Jack were involved with the show.  It was made by Depatie-Freleng which became Marvel Productions. MP made Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends.

Same here! I remember hearing how it was pronounced, having previously pronounced it as "Mag-NET-Oh" and thinking, "Really?... 'Mag-NEAT-Oh?'... 'Mag-NEAT-Oh'?"

I didn't think it sounded as "manly", and as a kid at the time almost wanted to refuse to pronounce it that way. I've since come to terms with the proper pronunciation. :-)

I think Paul McCartney taught me how to pronounce Magneto.

When I first discovered John Byrne comics, I thought his last name was pronounced "Byron". I got lots of flak over that one from my friends.

"Byron" at least makes some kind of sense, based on the spelling. "Brine" is the one that gets me. Are so many people dyslexic or something?

What struck me as interesting, as a child, was that my father somehow managed to pronounce the name "Bern," with the "e" very distinct. That's almost the way I pronounce it, tho mine comes out closer to the more common "Burn."

Nope, it used the "Mag-neat-oh" version.

Aside from H.E.R.B.I.E. replacing the Torch, I think that show wasn't too
far off the mark, especially considering that Kirby did storyboards, and
Stan scripted several episodes. Indeed, we got faithful adaptations of
several comic stories, including Doctor Doom's first appearance.

I had a friend who, for whatever reason, would pronounce Galactus as "Galac-tick-cus". He also would say "tree-ollo-gee" for trilogy.

And for some reason, I have heard several people confuse "Colossus" and "Cyclops", calling one the other's name.

Strange, I was almost certain.  I figured it must have been one of the other old Marvel cartoons but the only instance I could find was actually in a Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends episode, "A Firestar is born".  She says, "Mag-net-oh" when he appears in a flashback.

I heard a guy in a comics shop pronounce "Rogue" as "Raj."

Madame Rouge, the Doom Patrol villain, got called "Madame Rogue" by a whole lot of fans. I even heard one DC editor, with a PATROL issue open in front of him, disparaging fans who pronounced it "Rouge." I pointed to the name on the page. "Yeah, so?" Then his eyes seemed to focus and grow wide. Forty years he'd been pronouncing it the wrong way.

And I long ago gave up trying to get folk to pronounce our Forum's mascot's name with a soft "g". (I have also heard him called "Rogue.")

I think Unus was "you-nus" to me, from the get-go. Same with Byrne as "burn."

But, I was among those that read them as Mag-NETT-oh and Dark-SEED, at first. It was probably the animated shows that corrected them for me. I'm sure I butchered "Sub-Mariner" for awhile, too (having heard of Submarines...and Marines... and marinas...but not as familiar with mariners).

When I was six years old and THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN was the absolute most awesome show, ever...I had a friend who constantly mispronounced "bionics" as "by-non-ics". Drove me nuts. I mean, this wasn't something he read and misinterpreted. They said it, like, 15 times per episode!!

I have relatives with the last name "Byrne" and they pronounce it Burn-knee.

To this day I still pronounce Mag-net-oh wrong.
