As I recall, Hubert Humphrey maintained that if Robert Kennedy had lived, he (Humphrey) would still have won the nomination, and that he also would have won the election.

The advantage (also the disadvantage) of such speculation is that it's hard to prove anybody wrong.

The Stephen King novel sure paints a bleak alternative future if Kennedy was not killed. Again, the idea that he really was a mediocre President.
