Many of you know I am a HUGE fan of John Buscema. Well I just
added what could be considered the holy grail for a Big John
Buscema fan, the complete interior art for "How to Draw Comics The
Marvel Way" (HTDTMW). This includes the original art from spheres,
cylinders and drawing tools (eraser, brush, ruler) to the penciled
chapter splashes, plus all the text and stats used.

Since the book was produced in the 70s before desktop publishing,
everything was manually layout and pasted on board in the same
layout as the final printed book. From the first page with all the
copyright information to the acknowledgments. All the original art
(with a few exceptions) was drawing the size it was printed that art
was then mounted on the spreads along with the text and stats of art
from previously printed comic books used as examples. The few
exceptions is the Nova #12 published cover plus the some
thumbnails, rough pencils and finished pencil, Silver Surfer/Spider-
Man and Captain America/Britain fighting the Read Skull page (with
roughs and full pencils for both). These are drawn on standard 11x17
bristol stock. Not to mention the cover prelim.

My first exposure to the book was discovering it at the library when I
was in Jr High. I was blown away that I could become a comic book
artist (ya I soon realized I didnt have the patience or skill to become a
comic book artist). But I still loved looking thru the book and that
book has stuck with me ever since.I think that book helped me
appreciate the art in the comic books and later my collecting of
original comic art from Buscema and Byrne to Williamson and Zeck.

I was wondering what the artists on the board including JB thought of
the book. What kind of influence did it have one you? Some of you
started drawing after the book came out and some before. I know Will
Eisner came out with "Comics and Sequential Art: Principles and
Practices from the Legendary Cartoonist" which was more detailed
and went into the storytelling part, where the Marvel Way was a basic
starter book. here are a few pieces from the book:

My jaw just dropped!

Back when I was a young'un, I remember my parents going to Maine for an overnight shopping trip with some friends and when they came back they brought me that book. I was very excited, I had no idea such a thing existed! I still have it and love it.

Great score, Brian! Count me jealous!

Very cool! It's amazing that the entire interior stayed together for so
many years.

Very cool, Brian! That book has some amazing work in it. I remember
my jaw dropping to the floor when I got to a new chapter and saw his
Namor drawing. I'm both in aw of that piece and pissed that someone
can draw THAT well. It's just not right.

BTW Brian, in answer to your question; that book should be the
foundation of any artist trying to get in the business. Unfortunately,
most publishers would probably tell you that some of the information is
out of date with today's artists and there work. I contend that if
everyone studied and applied the book to there work, comicbooks
would be better for it.

Granted, some still do, but too many seem to think it's better as a
birdcage liner.
