The US announced its travel and trade embargo will be lifted against Cuba.  This is an acknowledgement that isolating the country all these years has not worked.

I think it is a good idea.  We have only been hurting the people there.

While not a matter I give much thought to, I find the timing absurd.  The Communist Party in Cuba managed to survive the fall their European benefactors by turning to Venezuela for assistance at the end of the intervening "Special Period".  Given the potential break-up of OPEC and the intense economic pressure faced by Venezuela with the long-term downward pressure on the price of oil, the Communist Party in Cuba finds itself at its most vulnerable position since the fall of the Soviet Union, and it's at this moment in time when we choose to reverse course on fifty years of policy?  It doesn't make any sense.

Out standing, I wonder how long it will take for travel, as well as trade to get started?

I'm wondering how long it will take to get my Club Havana rum imported. I have been sneaking it in my suitcase for years.

Though I do feel this is an outdated policy that has not served a purpose for decades. I am glad that the embargo will be lifted and that travel and trade may be resumed.

They have been in discussions since last year. I am amazed it has taken
this long, US and China have had diplomatic relations for 35 years. Both
are communist countries and poor human rights but Cuba has been
treated much differently. China has come along way since US opened
diplomatic relations, I think opening up the same with Cuba might help.
Again it might not but most other countries have diplomatic relations
with Cuba.

My main issue is that, if this is a horrible idea, I won't be able to believe a goddamn word I hear from the Republicans about it. Something something who cried wolf something and all that.

Sanity restored. I think this decision should prove beneficial for the US and Cuba alike.

Agreed it's far past time for this. All we were doing was punishing the Cuban people.

This should have been done decades ago. I'm glad to see it finally happening, though.

What do you mean by decades ago?  Do you mean the 21 years since the collapse of the the Soviet Union, or do you mean it should have been done even before the collapse of the Soviet Union?

Should've made them end the dictatorship first.
