That's right John it is!

Now I'm not sure that the one I grew up with would be right for that 'era' but when I grew up, "Numpty" was another word for "Stupid" or "Fool" or "Idiot".

edited to add---Oxford Dictionary places "Numpty" at 1980.

As an additional thought (Although it was a bit more harsh), "Spanner!" was a similar insult. Same meaning but might actually have links to the 'engineering' side...

Edited to add--In a sentence, "Oh ya Nupmty!" , "Ya Spanner!"

(As an aside, did you have 'muppet', meaning the same? I know the Muppets come from your side of the Pond. But we use the word in a similar derogatory context as the aforementioned, "Ah-Ya Muppet!" That was more when someone did something, like walk into a lamppost, not looking where they were going or spill something down themselves!)

--- If two were close to each other, it might "buffer" them against the full effect being experienced by the third, but not much.---JB

Again, interesting. That reminds me of of a Theremin (sp?). The farther from the source the weaker the note/feedback.
