US involvement nowadays seems to be going in and cleaning up the mess they caused in the first place e.g. Afghanistan

…the nuclear era in which we find ourselves today is far more precarious than that of the cold war era.

••

My Lack of God! You sound like a kid arguing with another kid over whose Dad is tougher! "Our nuclear threat is greater than your nuclear threat!"

As noted above, the chance that some terrorist nation might launch a few nukes, even if they were able to target, say, New York or Washington, is a far cry from the armageddon threatened during the Cold War. (Capital letters, btw. It wasn't called that because it was chilly outside.)

You'll forgive my use of hindsight, I'm sure.  The threat of mutually assured destruction worked as a deterrent because it could work.  How does one pursue a policy of deterrence with non-nation state organizations such as Al-Qaeda and ISIS, or even with the Islamic Republic of Iran who's policy decisions are dictated by Twelver Shia doctrine?  Therefore I choose the term precarious to describe our current situation, and will accurately set that description in opposition to the relative stability of the Cold War.  Because, again, in those previous circumstances, deterrence could and did work; even in the case of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
This, however, is not to suggest that previous circumstances were not themselves precarious, but rather to suggest that today's circumstances are more precarious.  And yes, I'll freely admit that my argument is built upon what might happen, but it strikes me that building an argument upon what may logically follow current circumstances is a far more rational foundation to build upon than one based upon what didn't happen.

How well I recall that moment, when the Soviet Union ceased to be, and I thought Sunnuvagun! It worked!

Of course, M.A.D. assumes we are dealing with rational minds, not religious fanatics.

Yep. Once you are able to convince people that their true reward
will come AFTER THEY DIE without ever being able to provide
actual proof of such, all bets are off.

Maybe it's "Virgin of the Month Club," and a new virgin is delivered to your afterlife abode on the first of the month.

To paraphrase Patrice O'Neal (RIP), I want women that know what
they are doing!
