I prefer to love him and hate him!

I have trouble imagining myself to be worth the effort either way!   :-/

I can remember picking this one off of the spinner rack at Mac's Milk.
Hard to believe that was 30+ years ago!

I didn't think of this until now, but Dave Sim formatted several issues
of Cerebus (44-50) sideways. At one point, with Cerebus drunk, the
panels rotated and spun around to normal, upside down and back to
sideways. Those issues were dated November 1982 to May 1983,
while FF 252 was dated March 1983.

It's pretty interesting that both JB and Sim got this idea at practically
the same time.

I believe it had been done previously, but can't remember where.

I didn't see those CEREBUS issues. My inspiration was the center spread in EAGLE, especially HEROS THE SPARTAN by Frank Bellamy.

I think Eisner may have done it in the Forties.

"It's crap like that that explains why Byrne is nothing today,"

I think those pages are the work of a brilliant mind!

Curious how two people can see the same thing so differently...

It helps that you CAN see.

(No, not a slur against blind people!)

If you describe the idea behind those pages to a blind man, it is possible that he can "see" how brilliant it is. Or not.

If that kind of fun stunt was done today, the book would still come out late.

I don't really consider it a stunt, but I bet if one of the 'kewl' guys in
the industry did it today, he would be praised as a trailblazer.

Didn't Steranko do something along those lines in his S.H.I.E.L.D. run?

"It's pretty interesting that both JB and Sim got this idea at practically
the same time"

Only almost at the same time. At the time Dave Sim freely admitted he got the idea from what John Byrne was doing in the FF. In addition to whatever else was going on story-wise in Cerebus, these were still the years when a constant comment on/spoof of/or even celebration of whatever was going on in mainstream comics was part of the mix.

While it may take some months or years to include parodies of story elements from the mainstream into the Cerebus storyline, I imagine copying a switch to widescreen was something that could be implemented almost immediately.

I am however stuck trying to recall what John Byrne said at the time about why he was flopping the FF pages for a while. I recall the gist of the quote, but only partially: If they can do (blank) over at (blank), then I can do widescreen. Or something like that - highly paraphrased. Needless to say, I'm getting old and forget what goes in the blanks. Any help?
