Michelle Obama* sorry for the typo.

And I am amazed that she is being criticized. We turned the west into a bunch of %$#@&*#.

All about this HERE.

It would be better if the U.S. wasn't "friends" with the extraordinarily authoritarian House of Saud in the first place.

I'd say USA maintain a respectful relationship with Saudi Arabia, not friendly. It's not like Israel, they are friends to USA, not Saudi Arabia. But I understand your point.

I think Laura Bush didn't cover her head, either.

It's interesting, though, that there's an inclination
among some to view misogyny as a mere "cultural
affectation" that we wouldn't do with racism or anti-
semitism. If a country's culture demanded that black
people kneel in the presence of white people or that Jews
lower their heads when around non-Jews, it wouldn't be up
for debate as to whether we would acknowledge those
cultural norms.

She was going to receive criticism either way, honestly.  If Barack Obama bows when he meets someone from Japan, he's showing weakness.  If he doesn't, he's disrespecting their culture.  The only story here would be if the Obama-haters didn't find something to complain about.

It's more than a "respectful relationship."

The U.S. sells weapons to Saudi Arabia, a state which flogs its subjects (like political prisoner Raif Badawi) if their blogs contain "undesirable" content, and which on average beheads 80 people per year (beat that, ISIS!), even for paltry crimes like theft and adultery. Women are prosecuted in "terrorism" courts simply for driving.

Not good.

Hard to believe that in 2015, in Saudi Arabia, women are not allowed to drive and are prosecuted for doing so.

Jason, don't forget that USA being ally with Saudi Arabia, helps to bring (at least some) balance to Middle East. The mains problem is that these people still live in the 7th century. There is no easy fix, but from the inside. I don't think USA is happy with Saudi Arabia, but sometimes you have to deal with the lesser evil, or you can kill everybody that is never going to accept the western lifestyle.

I applied for a job in Saudi Arabia in 2009, had a few interviews over the phone with a partner from Deloitte (guy was from Kwait). Even spoke with a Brazilian that used to work for the same company (Maaden, Saudi Arabia Mining Company). I've read about the country and the experiences of westerners living there. Some are outrageous!
I read about this group of teachers that were expelled as prostitutes (with a big stamp on their passaports) only because they used to greet their male co-workers with a hand shake. Yes, women hand shakes are considered prostitution in Saudi Arabia. Like I said, 7th century...
