When you feel a piece coming into the final stretch, is it easy to know when you're at the end and the piece is done? Do you do any regular "checks" to help you be sure?

I've ruined drawings by not quitting when I should have. It seems like there's a skill in knowing when to stop.

Knowing when to stop is one of the hardest things to learn, and everyone is different, so, alas, there are no handy guidelines.

And, of course, there's a trap waiting -- stopping too soon!

Thanks anyway!

Was there a time when you started to feel like you could stop at the right point more often than not?

An art teacher once offered my class the advice "When you don't know what to do anymore, it may mean you're finished."

An artist friend of mine said once (I believe it's a quote) -- "A painting is never finished, it's abandoned".

I guess I wonder about the kinds of mental challenges that come with moving from amateur to pro and how the victories feel along the way to becoming, dare I say, revered!
