Master of pulse-pounding sound effects and elegant speech balloons, for my money as much a part of the look of JB's classic run on the X-Men as Terry Austin's gorgeous inks, letterer extraordinaire Mr Tom Orzechowski celebrates his birthday today.

(Plus, of course, working on scripts by Mr Claremont, one has to be impressed not only by the quality of the lettering, but the quantity, too,)

He certainly added to that distinctive feeling X-Men had in its gory years. A wonderful letterer -- one of my favourites. Happy birthday to him!

Looking back at my old issues, his work really was a huge part of the look of X-men comics. Happy Birthday!

Comic book lettering is a small profession and many of us 'hang out' together online — I'm delighted to report that Orz is funny and self-effacing, and generous with his time and advice. One day, I will make it to a US con and buy him a much-deserved beer.

Orzechowski was a main influence on me in my early years. I kind of liked the way he produced distinctive "voices" for certain characters, like the yellow balloons with the heavy jagged lines for Phoenix when her power was turned up. He stuck around as long as I did, too, putting his mark on the likes of Byrne, Cockrum, Smith, Romita Jr. and Silvestri. That's quite a long time for a letterer to do any single comic.

For the like of me, I never did figure out what Phoenix was supposed to sound like. My child's mind kept making it seem like she was screaming, but now I wonder if there was supposed to be a sort of "booming goddess voice" instead.
