It seems to be a trend this year. Even though I escaped
the madness happening on the east coast (Hi Michael,
Peter!), some small portion of it followed me to
Istanbul! They had their biggest storm/snowfall in
something on the order of 28 years here a couple of
weeks ago, causing schools to be closed almost the
entire week, and had several snow days prior to even
that! Granted, a couple cm of snow on the ground is
enough to bring things to a screeching halt here, but
the point remains - an insane winter, by Istanbul
standards.

This was the view up my street on one of the worst days:

Trevor, the tree on the right looks like it could almost be a snow-covered Godzilla!

From what I'm told JB, a light dusting once or twice a
winter is common, but this is something else altogether.
We've had seven snow days here so far, neck and neck with
Nova Scotia - unprecedented!

We got 6 inches of snow in two hours last night. Fortunately there hasn't been any follow up!

Ice is the one condition that really makes me nervous. Snow is bad and sometimes worse, but ice can be more unpredictable.

I had to deal with it two days in a row now. The first one left a fairly thin coat that the salt and plows got rid of by Monday morning. Last night saw something a little more significant, but it seems that the rise in temperatures overnight took care of what landed on the trees before it got too bad. I'll only have to be careful stepping out of the house to make sure what's on the driveway also got melted.

The storm coming up the coast tonight is what I'll have to worry about now. The significant rain event has already tapered off, but what's coming is going to change from rain to sleet (@ 1") to heavy snow (5" to 9"). Having the icy undercoating is going to make driving especially dangerous __ and that's part of my day job!

I think the biggest concern at this point is if the warm temperatures come quickly and cause flooding.

We've had some snow and bit of ice in Atlanta and the locals are already sick of it. They've never been through a 'real' winter (I am from Michigan).

Another several inches yesterday, and the guys who were supposed to shovel my roof didn't show up! So that's about 22 inches accumulated, and now it's raining.
