The mode of transportation that I wish my son were taking. On his trip to China. My son is leaving to China this evening on an educational endeavor. For the next ten days he'll be traveling to several cities learning about historical restoration.  I'm excited for him but at the same time I very nervous as well. It's the flying that worries me. Besides the fact that this will be his first solo adventure out into the world. The fact that the weather isn't going to be the best it could has me wishing he wasn't going.

If this is his first trip outside North America, China can be a lot to take in. My first visit to a temple, I saw a lady squatting at the base of it, taking a shit. Clouds of pollution, spitting, rudeness, smoking in elevators, littering, queue-jumping, etc. Crazy food and dogs hanging on meat-hooks. Very friendly and accommodating people (with foreigners). It is a different world from the West and he should find it fascinating.

Well It has begun. I just returned from dropping him off at the airport.

Yes Neil it's his first trip out of North America. He is looking forward to the experience. I told him to make certain that he documents everything. Even thou his reason for taking the trip is school related. He should try to make as much of an adventure of it as he can.

Geez, that surely assuages Anthony's fears, Neil. ;-)

I hope your son has a safe, fun trip, Anthony. How old is he?

Anthony, I've been to China a lot of times through work. I've seem some of the things Neil mentions but not everything.

However, I've enjoyed my times there - fascinating place to visit. Incredible sites (just the level of construction is mindblowing - they don't build one tower block, they build them in suites of 20!).

Hope he enjoys it.

Thank you James. Unless it al turns into a complete nightmare. I expect he'll enjoy himself.

He was hoping that he would be able to watch some Netflix on the flight over Twilight Zone of course. Nightmare at 20,000 feet he said. Gotta love the kid's sense of humor.

21 huh? Chinese girls can be quite tenacious, especially around young Western guys. The young guys at my school have a great time here. That should make you feel better. :)

Shanghai is by far the most metropolitan city in China and Hong Kong is awesome. Also, the pollution is quite low right now. Rumour is that since Prince William is visiting China, they have ordered the factories to shut down until he leaves.

Didier, I'm not certain. We didn't get into too much detail. I suspect he probably didn't know. He said the the teacher had all the information. He didn't expect to be in Hong Kong long.
