I used to buy 30 or 40 issues a month -- now maybe 10.  Sad part is, I barely read those 10, I'm mostly buying out of habit.

It is a sickness.

My point was when I realized I didn't want
to keep "half" of what I bought.

Now I only buy trades I want to keep, and
read library copies of tpb I want to read
but don't necessarily want to keep. I
even read some library copies out of
curiosity that I never would have bought.

Right now the only monthly I buy is Lady
Mechanika. And the only reason I do that
is because I doubt it will ever come out
as a tpb.

The cluster schtupp that The Avengers has become during Jonathan Hickman's tenure on the title was the proverbial straw for me last summer.  I went in once in July and once in August to purchase what had been ordered for me then dropped everything, including the few titles I still enjoyed.  Out of all of those books I only read maybe four or five; the rest I just didn't care about any longer.  I don't miss them and the comics "news" that shows up on my Yahoo feed confirms for me that I did the right thing.

I still buy anything by JB, Walt, JRjr, andJim Lee. I look for stuff by Jimmy Cheung and Oliver Coipel, but they don't really do anything monthly anymore.

Recently, I've only picked up New Voyages and a couple of issues of Sensation Comics featuring Gilbert Hernandez doing a fun, Silver Age-style Wonder Woman. I picked those up as (pricey) back issues since I heard about them late. I haven't found any issues of Ragnarok in my area meaning the local stores are ordering low, selling out fast, and not bumping their numbers. "Get a hold slot," used to be the mantra in such cases, but since the greatest number of titles I've picked up in a month since 2000 or so has been 5 or 6, the hold slot proprietors nag, whine, bitch, moan, and do not actually put the ordered books in the slot since whatever copies they order need to go to "real customers" who actually spend "real money," and not to useless time-wasting customers such as myself who do not order variant covers the way all the really good customers do. As such, hold slots are not worth the bother, especially with the selection available these days.

Once upon a time. long, long ago, comics used to fun. Going into a store used to be fun. Nowadays, that is not the case. These days, you must game, purchase multiple variant covers, follow crossovers religiously (you can around this one by buying the "cool" indies, meaning the ones the store owner likes), or brother, you are just in everyone else's way and need to move...

Been about 24 years for me now.  My daughter was born, got my first real job ... time/money/mindspace got tight, priorities shifted ... seemed like there was so much stuff going on in the Marvel Universe, I couldn't remember storylines from month to month.  The X-Titles, in particular, became confusing.  (And kinda ugly, art-wise.)  I just got tired.

I haven't bought anything new from Marvel or DC in about 4 years.
I haven't bought anything regularly from either of them in about 8 years.

I buy a few books from IDW. Anything JB puts out. Walt's
RAGNAROK. I'm now addicted to there Artist Editions.

I'll pick up Dynamite's FLASH GORDON and pulp works like DOC
SAVAGE and the SHADOW. Every now and then, I splurge and buy a
collection of an older series, either the Masterworks, trade collection or
omnibus.

And for some reason, about twice a year, I'll pick up something from
the Big Two that strikes my fancy. I'm almost always disappointed.

I'm a happy new comic buyer--but they are sure making it tough! I gave the New 52 a decent shot, and I was enjoying WONDER WOMAN, FLASH, AQUAMAN, and some issues of some of the others...but now I'm down to just WONDER WOMAN, and that's just to see David Finch's version for a while.

Over at Marvel, I have about ten subscriptions and I really enjoy all of those...BUT I am really worried about the Marvel version of CRISIS that's coming. They plan these things as good jumping on points...without realizing that they usually make even better jumping OFF points!

But there's still the independent stuff like anything from JB, RAGNAROK, ASTRO CITY, FADEOUT (anything by Brubaker and Philips), and VELVET.

"Hello, my name is Gundars, and it had been 16 years since I bought a comic book."

Walking away from comics in 96 was fairly easy. Lots of reasons. When I found out that JB had done more X-Men, The Hidden Years it sparked my interest. I checked out the new local comic book store, bought Volume 1 and 2 of Hidden Years, joined the forum and bought Trio #1 to get me off the wagon.

Wait, there are donuts…?

"I decided to stop for two reasons, I was not finding or enjoying any of the books from the big two, and the expense. "

There is still interesting stuff going on outside of the big two. Black Science and Manhattan Projects are incredibly good stuff.
