When Black Widow was created originally she was a
villain. Was it always Marvel's intent for her to turn
into a good guy, like Hawkeye, or was it something that
just grew out of the story-line?

It just grew. Pretty much like everything Marvel in those days!

I only remember Natasha as the member of the Champions, and was only vaguely aware of her former villain status. It seems that she was one of those noble characters who only served the bad guys out of loyalty (she was a Russian spy in those early Iron Man appearances), then saw that they were the bad guys and wanted no part of their cause at that point. Excactly when she showed up as a regular in the Marvel superhero ranks is unclear to me (I came in well after that point).

She was a supporting character in the Avengers for a while as Hawkeye's girlfriend prior to her costume change and first solo strip. She was probably more central to some plots than actual Avengers!  I wonder if those appearances led to her getting her solo strip?

And she shared title credits in Daredevil for a couple of years in the early 1970s. After that, she seemed to have disappeared for awhile.

I recall seeing the double-billing on some of those back issues. They must've barely managed to stay above the threshold of cancelation because DD managed to get to where Frank Miller could revitalize the character. It seems that she was most often around with the Avengers (I recall her taking a role with them during the '80s/'90s).

I think she went Iron Man>>Avengers>>Daredevil>>Champions>> ; then nothing steady until she rejoins the Avengers (early 90's)

Iron Man --> Avengers --> Amazing Adventures --> Daredevil --> Champions

Then it was bouncing around for short appearances in various titles like Marvel-Team-Up, Marvel Fanfare, Daredevil, Avengers, Iron Man and Marvel Comics Presents.
