Man, those GI Comics were such a HUGE part of my childhood.  Iconic doesn't even begin to describe it.

RIP Mr. Trimpe.

I had a HULK popup book with Trimpe art way before I ever owned a comic book.  Trimpe is probably my personal second favorite HULK artist and without much question one of the three or four most important creators to ever work on the character.  I would describe him as the primary artist during the most important formative years of the character.  The Hulk is one of the five best known comicbook superheroes and what the public recognizes as the Hulk was created during the Trimpe years.

I'm glad to have had the chance to meet Trimpe a handful of times, got a couple commissions from him and had him sign some comics.  I even chatted with him at a con after party one time.  He was one of the first artists I ever commissioned art from through the mail once I could afford such things.

Drawing the first ever appearance of Wolverine and being one of the primary artists associated with the Hulk make him an immortal in the history of superhero comics.

RIP Mr. Trimpe.

One of the very first artist names I learned to recognize and appreciate when I was a kid... grew up with numerous issues of his artwork, from the MARVEL SUPER HEROES Hulk reprints, to THE DEFENDERS, to SHOGUN WARRIORS and then G.I. JOE... even inherited some original 1960's INCREDIBLE HULK issues from my mother's ex-boyfriend, when I was only 9 (I can't think of a better inker for Herb Trimpe than Marie Severin... one of the iconic duos of Marvel Comics artists!).

I e-mailed Mr. Trimpe on a whim almost 10 years ago (after stumbling across a website of his), just to tell him how much his artwork meant to me as a kid... lo & behold, I received a response from him the very next day, very kind and appreciative. Wish I could dig out the hard copy (I immediately printed it out at the time), but while he briefly lamented the then-current state of the industry, he seemed proud to have played such a notable part in the glory days of Marvel.

Very sad, but the man left his mark. RIP

He penciled "The Brute that Shouted Love at the Heart of the Atom", my favorite Hulk story. Unforgettable. RIP
