As for other publishers' characters, as anyone made Jughead Jones gay yet? One of the failed 1970sTV versions had Jughead wishing that he wasn't 'so shy around girls'...so he moved out west and became 'Rawhide' Jones?

If you think that's stupid, then Axel Alonso's reasons for justifying Rawhide Kid being retconned into being gay was an even higher level of stupidity. Alonso said that Rawhide Kid was obviously gay because he was shy around women. yes folks, these are the geniuses calling the shots at Marvel's publishing division.

And let's pause a moment to recall the sensitive portrayal of homosexuality in that series!

The idea of diversity as demonstrated by Marvel and DC seems to be to take a random white, straight character and then turn him/her into something else. Granted, there are plenty of white, straight characters to choose from, but it's still patronizing as hell.

Wow, that page Rick posted was terrible.

Catwoman has been portrayed as bisexual since Batman: Year One, I believe. That story must be troubling to modern readers, as it strongly implies that she's strictly lesbian until the manliness of Batman shows her the light. Of course, she's also working as a dominatrix prostitute and cohabiting with a minor, so not the most positive portrayal of homosexuals ever seen. I still like it, though; that portrayal of Catwoman fits the noir sensibilities of the story.

I can confirm what Rick said about this being speculation on message boards.  Posters insisting he was gay.  And this goes way back.  I saw this on boards in the late 90s and early 2000s.  I haven't bought the x books in over 10 years and I know it was before then.

Frankly with how Marvel handles their characters, I'm surprised this hadn't happened until now.  I can say that before I saw those message board posts that it never crossed my mind that Bobby Drake was gay or bisexual.

Yep, I recall the "Iceman is gay" nonsense from (way?) back in the 90's also. His failed relationship with Opal Tanaka was used as "evidence".

Around the office, back in the day, the response to fan buzz about Iceman being Gay because of his social ineptness and lack of success with women prompted the response "You mean like the fans?"

I find myself pondering the title of this thread, tho. Is it possible to "Out" a fictional character? In the case of Northstar, who was, as I have said, Gay from day two, I suppose so. But in the case of a long standing character who was certainly not created to be Gay -- well, it's a retcon, isn't it. Not an Outing.

Perhaps we should call this sort of thing a "ret-fab."

Has me wondering, when did retcons start or became a regular used fallback? Did creators take the lead from What If?

Well, for fans upset about Peter Parker's marriage ending because of Mephisto, now there's an alternate excuse...
