"I need not rely on sheer brute strength, for mine is the power cosmic."

OK.  I can buy that.  Referring back to the fight between Terrax and the Silver Surfer in FF 260, given the energy unleashed by the two Heralds it makes sense that the Surfer didn't need to match Terrax's strength to achieve what he did.

Bob Layton, man. I don't dislike his work, but, whew, the Vaseline and nipples

************

In those images posted, Hercules, Namor and Ka-Zar have nipples, but Hulk doesn't. Odd.

I always saw Colossus and She-Hulk as being in the "heavyweights" class alongside Ben Grimm and Namor.
**********************

At the time of that comic, I always saw Colossus as still growing and not quite at his full potential strength.

Craig: Sure, but even at his young age I thought he was on a par with
Ben and Namor. Maybe not quite as strong, but in their league. Could
he, as he grew and developed, potentially become stronger than either
of them? Maybe. All I knew for sure back then was that I didn't agree
with him being on the same tier as Spidey.

I like to think of Thor as Marvel's equivalent of Superman. Not literally as powerful, but he holds that kind of position in the overall power hierarchy.

My Top 5

Hercules
Thor
Hulk
Thing
Namor

Not matter how strong the Hulk gets, he does not have the hand-to-hand fighting skills of  the others mentioned.

In my opinion, Namor (out of water) and Ben Grimm can swing with a formidably enraged Hulk.

And with centuries of battles with monsters that rivals the Hulk's strength, Thor and Hercules are more than a match for the Hulk.

Are we talking strength or fighting skill?

When I think of where the Hulk ranks in terms of strength and fighting
prowess, I go back to the classic Lee and Kirby-crafted classic where the
jade giant took on both the Avengers and the Fantastic Four, battling
them to a standstill. In my mind, the power and savagery of the Hulk that
JB showed in his battle against Hercules, Iron Man, Sub-Mariner and
Wonder Man was right on target.

Colossus shouldn't be as strong as Ben, but he should be stronger
than Spider-Man. Heck, I don't even think Spidey should be stronger
than Power Man, but hey..

Oh, and under water, Sub-Mariner should (almost) always win
against any of those other guys.

I agree with that statement wholeheartedly.

...

When I posed the question I was referring to pure strength
Think of an arm wrestling tournament (if you could get the Hulk to sit down for it).
Which reminds me of this image from my 1981 calender:

1 Hercules (and Hulk super-enraged)
2 Thor (and Namor when wet)
3 Hulk
4 Namor
5 Thing and She-Hulk

Heck, I don't even think Spidey should be stronger
than Power Man, but hey
----------------------------------
Yeah, going through this makes me realise how overpowered the characters seem. Spider-Man should be able to lift up a SUV.... but 10 SUVs seems excessive. Beast's strength has been massively boosted over the years, but for no real good reason other than to keep up as part of an MU-wide arms race in which characters' power levels keep rising.

If I was to say what should be rather than what is (which I know is not the question of the thread, but we already have many good answers as to what is), I would start with the Hulk as 'strongest there is', enraged or not and work relatively back from there. Thor second. Though not as strong as the Hulk, the Thing has fought him well many times, so should be considered close.

Though I do agree with the concept of the specialist rule in general, I think we have to be smart about its application. It can be used to argue Hercules is stronger than Thor as strength is his only power, but where does this leave us with She-Hulk and Luke Cage? As far as Hercules goes, the comics state that he is the same character as the Hercules from legend. A demi-god, a hero with great strength, but I don't see him as strong as Thor.

Wonder Man should be up there, maybe Iron Man. But it would probably be a good idea if everyone went back to less-awesomely powered levels of the 60s. Hulk can juggle elephants, but Beast should not be able to to.

I'd have Spidey and Beast be able to lift no more than a tonne or two. No one but the Hulk, would be able to lift 100 tonnes.

If you go by what was written back in OHOTMU, Gilgamesh is stronger than the non-angry Hulk, which just seems rotten to me.

I can't see how anybody would rank Hercules above Thor and the Hulk in a ranking system like this -- Thor is a god, while Hercules is "just" a demi-god, so I would think Thor would automatically be more powerful/strong.

I personally feel like the Vision and Wonder-Man tend to be under-rated, most of the time -- both the Vision and Wonder-Man have been said to hit as hard as Thor, and I always tend to think of them as the "powerhouses" on the Avengers whenever Thor and Iron Man are out of the lineup.  I also tend to think of Iron Man as being often underrated -- he's gone toe-to-toe with the Hulk in just his "basic" armor, so I'd definitely rank him as one of the Avenger's "heavyweights."

How strong is The Beast? At least strong enough to make a monkey out of a gorilla! He's no pushover, that's for sure.
