And, seriously, what "key parts of the original aren't even visible"?  It looks like all of them are visible except the eyes, mouth and hand of the man being photographed.

Free to look at, Peter. NOT to use like this guy is. Do you honestly think it's ok for him to use the picture of that girl (hell, even the tags and notation on the page) that she took of herself and sell it and make $90K and she not get a dime of that? Without even asking her if he can sell a picture of her?

They were discussing this on CNN today. The guest, an art
critic, says all the pictures he uses are in the public
domain.

But then says the copyright law is fuzzy.

The people spending $90k on these prints weren't going to do anything productive with that money anyway, so I'm not getting too worked up about it.  The legality is fuzzy, the message is empty, the audience is pretty dim...I guess it all works.

Appropriation is considered by many a legitimate form of Art (capital A.) I have no taste for it myself and consider many examples, like the work of this man, to be egregious. Still, for those collectors who deem Appropriation appropriate, what this guy is doing is likely considered revelatory, daring, clever, and edgy. And the sums of money that change hands in the art world are mind-scrambling. In a sense, the collectors are betting that the Appropriation movement will continue in full flower, gaining momentum and followers along the way, and their investment in this man's activities will similarly prosper. There's a very good chance they're not wrong.

Appropriation's been played out for a loooong time in the art world.  Artists and buyers eventually realized that if someone goes to the "the idea is that I'm using other people's ideas" well over and over again, that probably means they're dealing with someone who doesn't actually have anything worth saying, and that the artist is better at self-promotion than anything else.

Anyone know how many of these $90k prints Price is actually selling, or is the pricetag itself what's driving this story?  He scored himself some press, the Suicidegirls have teed off on him and are doing a charity fundraiser to capitalize on his show, and the general public gets another story that makes them think that all modern art is exactly this stupid and devoid of content, further wrecking things for everyone else.
