At least that's what I think this "artist" is doing, stealing Instagram pics without permission, repurposing them and selling them for a massive profit.

The new Lichtenstein? Thoughts?

I'm just shocked that people would pay SO MUCH for these prints!!!

WHAT is the motivation here??? I don't really get it.

Somebody shelled out $90 K for a picture he could have printed out and framed himself. "A fool and his money..." indeed. As for the artist, he sounds utterly contemptible.

I find this different from Liechtenstein in several key ways.

He's not exactly hiding where he got it from -- he even clearly labels the Instagram username. The people who took the pictures made the decision to disseminate their pictures for free, granting Instagram (though not necessarily this artist, the licence is transferable) a royalty-free worldwide licence to use their photos posted to Instagram.

I don't see why anyone would stump up for the pictures -- virtually no artistic input has gone into the works beyond the conceptual leap of printing them out and making them pieces of art -- but presumably it's more to do with this artist's name being attached than the content itself because, as Petter pointed out, if they just wanted the picture they could recreate it at low cost.

Instagram should be the one going after Prince for a cut of the proceeds anyway. Granted I'm not a legal guru, but someone ought to target the wallet of this prick!

He's brilliant -- perhaps unethical -- but still brilliant ...

... to realize a fool is STILL born every minute.

The very flower of entrepreneurship !!!

Yes, yes, yes.  A fool and his money.  But people don't see or are ignoring the information at the bottom of the article where the "artist", in another case, appropriated copy-written photos, slapped a cut out ala Lichtenstein on them and sold them as originals.  Sure, there's always someone who wants to buy this kind of crap, but it wouldn't be available to be sold if someone didn't basically steal it in the first place. He's not brilliant.  He's a thief! He certainly doesn't deserve an "attaboy" and a pat on the back for selling snake oil.

I'm surprised at myself for saying this... but I think this is kinda brilliant. They look good too, I wouldn't mind hanging some of these in my wall but I'd definitely go for the cheaper print-it-yourself option. At least the "artist" can't be offended at that, no?

What is he stealing with the Instagram pictures? Those images have been made available for FREE to EVERYONE by the original creators.

As for the copyrighted images with the slapped on cut outs... If the Supreme Court deems it fair use, I would tend to agree based on the sole example in the article-- the key parts of the original image aren't even visible.

The Supreme Court didn't rule on this particular case, Peter.  In fact, the artist settled out of court.

If you want to say that what he did was fair game, just say it.  I don't think it is.  So we're at an impasse, no?
