Last Wednesday night I had a heart attack, at 48 yearsyoung.  I was asleep and had somechest pain along my upper chest.  Ithought it might be stress because my life has been very stressful lately.  Mom died at the beginning of the year, my dadsuffers from Alzheimer’s and my sister and I had been taking care of him, working on getting my parents’ house ready to be rented out so we could  move my dad into an assisted living facility….alot of stress going on here.  I won’teven go into work.

I tried some deep breathing to calm myself down, took some aspirin, but then the pain started going down both arms and I knew I was not in a goodplace.  I woke my husband, Frank, up andhe rushed me off to the hospital, about a 10 minute drive.

Well, if there is a good heart attack I had it.  I have no blockage of my arteries, but thereis some signs of some heart disease.  Thedoctors are treating me with some meds, and I’m tweaking my diet and gettingback onto the exercise wagon.

What I thought a heart attack would be, wasn’t what I reallyfelt.  I was always told sharp shootingpain down the left arm, and sharp pain in the chest. The pain I felt was like Ihad done an extremely hard upper chest work out and I had terrible musclepain.  The pain that was going down myarms was not shooting pain but more an achy in nature. It kind of interesting how my mind was thinking of everything else my pain could be and did not want to think it was a heart attack.  I'm too young, in pretty decent shape, I'm 48 freakin years old.  Come on.

I have been taking it easy this past week, and Frank hasbeen very much on me to rest and not overdue it.  I cannot ask for a better husband and all thesupport he has given me.  Truth be toldhe has been on me for a very long time to get back to exercising and eating alittle better….what can I say, I like cheese.

I want you all to know that if you have not had a healthcheck in a year, I highly recommend making an appointment with your doctor andhave yourself checked out.  Have yourblood checked, and if you are not exercising, go out for a walk for 30 minutesa day.  It really isn’t that long of aperiod of time and it can do a whole lot of good.

Cheer to you all and may you all be in good health.

Glad you made it through, Mark.

I appreciate you sharing your story with us.  I can fall into unhealthy eating patterns and get a lack of exercise, and it's a wake-up call to those of us in our forties that this is a very real possibility.

When we're healthy it's hard not to take our health for granted but a scare like this can put the thin thread of our existences into perspective.  There aren't a lot of good heart attacks but it sounds like this one was a bit of a wakeup for you and you're doing all the right things now.   Best wishes for a speedy recovery Mark.

I'm glad to hear your attack was one of the "good" ones, best wishes on getting on track to better personal health and hopefully finding some help with managing your stress too.

like the others, I, too, am glad that you seem to be safe, Mark.
also, I applaud that you chose to write about what you felt at the time to help others. I have also had a heart attack but cannot describe anything about it - I was unconscious and on an operating room table for a very different procedure when it happened.
I know I am not the first person to say this, but, getting old sucks!
