So, after 17 years in the same house my family and I are moving (we have simply outgrown it). The new house is great, my two girls have rooms of their own and my wife and I have dens!

My question to the forum is ... Do you have any suggestions that could make the move any easier? Or maybe just some stories of your own experience.

This may not apply on this move, but could help if there are any future ones. I've moved a lot, and what I've started doing is, I only unpack boxes when I need what's in them. Boxes that are left a week or two after the move, I store (in the basement, attic, a spare room, whatever). Any box that still hasn't been opened on the next move gets donated.

That practice has saved me a lot of time overall, and kept me from accumulating a lot of unnecessary crap over the years.

I plan to be in the same situation soon myself. Our house is currently on
the market. This is going to be a different move for us -- I plan on buying
a place on a lake in South Carolina and moving the majority of our stuff
there, and renting an apartment out on Long Island for work and moving
the rest of our stuff there. All of the kids are gone and shouldn't be
coming back home, so we're planning on downsizing substantially.

They say moving is the most stressful of all the thing life can inflict upon us.

And I can testify!

Make a moving plan. The big stuff (appliances and such) don't need it but if you have as many books and knick knacks as we have -- and with two kids there must be a lot of toys -- you will.

Buy a ton of moving boxes and label them properly. This costs a bit of money but same-sized boxes stack well and let themselves to color-coding with markers or highlighters.

Also, get tools so you can take doors off their hinges and such.

I  don't know how much time you have to perform the actual move but staggering it over two days is better than bing-bang in one day.

Best thing is getting friends and relatives to help. Paying your helpers off in beer and barbecue is better than hiring movers.

I've moved 10 times in the last fifteen years...I despise moving!

Hire movers if you can...only one of my ten moves was handled by
movers and it was by far the easiest.

If you can't hire movers...I'd recommend you start boxing up stuff about
2 weeks before the move. Too early and you're living in a warehouse and
that is not cool! Too late and you're packing while you move...also not
cool.

Pack your kitchen last...if you can start making small trips in the week
before the big move with what you can fit in a car for a single trip. Save
the big stuff for last. Buy plenty of food and beer for the friends that are
going to help you move!

Good luck!

Save some money...hit your local grocery store for boxes. Stay away rom
produce boxes...most have a waxy coating and are messy as hell. Dried
Fruit and Nut boxes are the best...they're sturdy and just the right size.
Use chips/snacks boxes for linens and pillows...they're larger and not
quite as sturdy but great for light bulky stuff.

Good labeling is crucial...nothing worse than not knowing where
everything is.
