Chris Claremont has said this is what Marvel is doing in a interview on a podcast. I think he is someone who might have some knowledge and give what's been said some validity.

Here is an article where Claremont mentioned it at a convention: Link.

A bit harder to see, but look a the far left...Reed and the Thing have been edited out of the background.

Add the Human Torch to list of those missing from the second cover shown, although curiously his fire trail remains.

I wish I could see that first shirt more clearly. Did they find a Zeck Thor (from the interior, maybe), or is it just pasted from another promo?

That's my Iron Fist on the first shirt. I feel unclean.

That Secret Wars #8 shirt is in Lucas territory.

Oh, I didn't even notice him. [EDIT: Iron First]

What they've added (Heroes for Hire, Doctor Strange), are obviously properties that are set to launch in the relatively near future. Captain Marvel was probably removed because the Carol Danvers Ms./Captain Marvel is set to debut in the movies fairly soon.

Bob, I think you are correct about Captain Marvel. There's Inhumans and The Black Panther on the shirt, too.

What's really sad about those shirts is that Marvel got rid of 2 female characters (one of whom is black) and that they couldn't spend some money to pay an artist to create brand new images/art for those 2 shirts using the MCU characters.

I loved your Iron First art in Secret Wars John.

In all seriousness, I also wonder what Mike Zeck thinks about his art getting chopped up like that too.

I wonder why are the Wasp and Captain Marvel/Monica Rambeau also edited out of the shirt.

------------------------------------------------------------

It’s because they don’t want any newer readers/viewers to wonder why the Captain Marvel of the upcoming new film is white, blonde and blue eyed, since the Carol Danvers version is what they’ve chosen for the film universe. The recent audio version of the original Secret Wars also had Monica Rambeau annoyingly being referred to by all the characters, (and narrator) only by her newer ‘Spectrum’ name, despite the fact that she was Captain Marvel in the original books.
So it is indeed another one of those business concerns slapping the face of any long term fans things. Just in a different way.

As for the Wasp. I blame that one on the whole mess Edgar Wright made with the Ant-man movie.(Supposedly Janet Van Dyne is referred to as his dead wife in the screenplay) I wish Marvel had just scrapped Wright's ideas completely when he left, and set it in the present day. It still annoys me to this day that Joss Whedon wasn't allowed to use Janet in the original Avengers film because of what was going on for the Ant Man movie. I'd say she was always much more important for the Avengers than Black Widow ever was.
