If I had that kind of money, I'd buy a similarly sized (if possible) commission. It's an original work, and the money goes directly to the artist.

It'll never catch on, for a variety of reasons we've all discussed here on the Forum, but it would be great if some token amount, five or ten percent, of original art sales would go to the artist or the artist's estate upon resale.  Given how much I've seen people flip out at the suggestion of this as just a hypothetical concept, it won't happen, but I'd love to see the person who drops $100k or more on this cover take the opportunity to send a thousand-dollar check to The Hero Initiative in honor of Fred Ray (which would maybe be one percent of the purchase price.  Transaction fees are going to be a lot more than that).

It won't happen because of the utterly moronic notion held by some collectors that such a payment would mean they'd "lose money."

They buy a piece for $1000, sell it for $2000, but receive "only" $1800 is the original artist gets 10%. They see it as a loss of $200, not a gain of $800.

I've tested some of these people with an imaginary scenario: They see two $50 bills blowing down the street. They grab for them, but only catch one. Universally, the response to this is that they are down $50.

When I found out a collector had paid more for one of my double-page
spreads from X-MEN than I paid for my Rembrandt I told him he was
nuts. His reply, "Rembrandt didn't draw my favorite comic when I was a
kid."

JB,
Then you don't want to know what the Uncanny X-Men #136 page after
Prof X defeats Phoenix just went for on HA.

"Then"? This knowledge would somehow contradict my statement?

Cover price on X-Men 136 is forty cents, so the interior pages work out to about two cents each, with the cover worth about six cents.  Adjusted for inflation, I'll guess someone with a nice shiny quarter walked away with a piece of original artwork, right?

I LOVE that line!

None, but you might think the winner was even more crazy.
