An observation - I read elsewhere that the Superman cover is
expected to sell for $125,000. That figure is a bit surprising to me
when you consider that the Hulk page featuring Wolverine's first
appearance sold for over $600,000. I would have expected the cover
to sell for considerably more than $125,000 due to the fact that it's the
earliest piece of Superman comic art.

Don't expect logic from art collectors. Strictly emotion.

That's a museum piece. Blown up you can see the paste-ups. If this is its actual condition, then that is remarkable.

From Jerry Robinson's estate.  He owned a number of really incredible covers from that era, including this one, which is a million-dollar cover if there ever was one:

Much of it comes down to nostalgia. The Hulk page featuring
Wolverine, same with the Amazing Spider-Men covers by Mcfarlane
that sold for over $300K many comic art collectors remember reading
and many have the money to afford those prices.
When it comes to golden age, nostalgia doesn't figure into it as those
who read that issue off the stand are dead or on fixed incomes.
Superman #12 is a nice cover but not historic like Action #1 or
Detective #27 or a memorable cover like #14.

When I found out a collector had paid more for one of my double-page spreads from X-MEN than I paid for my Rembrandt I told him he was nuts. His reply, "Rembrandt didn't draw my favorite comic when I was a kid."

SER: If I had that kind of money, I'd buy a similarly
sized (if possible) commission. It's an original work, and
the money goes directly to the artist.

I can understand the emotional part of it, but that estimated selling price still surprises me given that practically NO original DC art of that vintage exists.
