I have been rereading "Rendezvous with Rama" this week. I so enjoy this book. Arthur C. Clarke's idea of exploration of the alien world continues to hold up well. I read the other Rama books when they came out in the 90's but they don't have the same wonder and mystery that the first book had. I know Gentry Lee wrote the bulk of that series but it was not a good fit for my tastes. I think Gentry Lee's work explained everything way was why I didn't like it as well.

I love stories about bug dumb objects, and there is something about it that feels archetypical. Hopefully we will see it as a movie adaptation sometime. Sadly Hollywood think that a big movie needs to have certain elements in it to attract audience. Can't blame them if we are talking about a huge budget, but is the exploration of such an alien territory really not exciting enough? It could work if the audience knew what not to expect, instead of sitting there waiting for some action and conflicts that will never appear.

hmm, read this as a kid back in the 70s (ah, 1977, year I went to Indiana for the summer), and was thinking of reading it again, having just read Childhood's End.
it's a sign I need to put this on my list

I've always loved the entire series. Re-read them every few years.

The first is a classic and I love it, but the rest of the series overexplains things to the point of boredom. The wonderfully chilling final scene of the book was added by Clarke just before he sent it to his editors and hadn't been part of any previous drafts, but it's really what makes the book stay with you.

Definitely would be better as a TV mini-series!

The sequels perhaps, but the first novel would (in my opinion) work best as a big budget theatrical feature.

Morgan Freeman owns the movie rights to this book.
